Steve SilvermanAug 21, 2016

Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya may have saved the best for last.

The powerful distance runner won the Olympic marathon Sunday in a time of 2:08:44 on the last day of competition in Rio.

Kipchoge dominated the race to the point where he was able to sprint across the finish line and put a big smile on his face in the process. Feyisa Lelisa of Ethiopia took the silver medal in 2:09:54, while American Galen Rupp took home the bronze medal.

Rupp became the first American to medal in the marathon since Meb Keflezighi won the silver medal in 2004. Rupp's time of 2:10:30 was his personal best, and American Jared Ward finished sixth in the race.

Rupp had a disappointing fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters last week.

Here's a look at the overall medal count.

The United States completed its run to the gold medal in men's basketball, with a 96-66 victory over Serbia in the championship game.

After struggling against the Serbs earlier in the Olympics, Kevin Durant led the Americans to a much sharper performance. He scored 30 points, 24 of which came in the first half.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski is leaving Team USA after leading the team to three straight Olympic gold medals.

American fighter Claressa Shields of Flint, Michigan, became the first American boxer to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals, as she pounded out a unanimous decision over Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands.

Shields got off to a bit of a slow start in the first round, but she took over with her power and accurate punches at the start of the second round. She staggered Fontjin with a hard right hand in the second round, and the Dutch fighter was unable to mount any effective combinations after that.

After winning the 75-kilogram title, Shields sprinted around the outside of the ring while holding the American flag. She also won the gold medal in 2012.

Shields raised her record to 77-1, with the only loss coming in 2012 before the London Olympics.

Shields said she took responsibility for her career as she has matured, and that helped her prepare for a run at her second Olympic gold medal.

“Now, it’s like, I have to tell myself to do those things," Shields told Jeff Seidel of the Detroit Free Press. "Go to bed. Drink right. Eat right. Don’t stay up too late. I’m telling myself to focus.”

Tony Yoka of France won a controversial split decision over Joe Joyce of Great Britain to take the gold medal in men's heavyweight boxing.

Joyce appeared to have the best of it in the first round as he was firing punches that landed on his opponent, while Yoka was doing little more than blocking several of Joyce's shots. Despite that advantage, Yoka was given the round on two of the three scorecards.

Yoka appeared to win a close second round, while Joyce was the more efficient boxer in the third round. In addition to showing accuracy with his punches, Joyce was also more aggressive throughout the round.

Yoka won the bout on two of the three scorecards, and when the decision was announced, he jumped for joy in the center of the ring.
