Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Results, Standings and Final Reaction

Tom SunderlandAug 21, 2016

The United States have officially clinched global bragging rights after once again topping the overall medal count at the 2016 Rio Olympics, as Sunday brought to a close another edition of the Summer Games.

A gold medal in the men's basketball final sealed the United States' total haul, which saw them end competition with 121 medals overall, including 46 gold medals, 37 silvers and 38 bronze finishes.

Gold in the men's basketball was perhaps the ideal way to cap off the United States' haul, with the best and brightest of the National Basketball Association delivering one last accolade to remember.

Women's middleweight boxer Claressa Shields, 21,  also contributed to the United States' overall medal tally after she defeated Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands to successfully defend her gold medal.

Earlier on Sunday, Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya bagged gold in the men's marathon, while Great Britain's Joe Joyce was forced to settle for silver in the men's super heavyweight boxing final against gold medallist Tony Victor James Yoka of France.

Two more gold medals were handed out in freestyle wrestling, where Russia's Soslan Ramonov and Kyle Frederick Snyder of the United States took top spot in the 65-kilogram and 97-kilogram finals, respectively.

Read on as we discuss those gold-medal finals and much more as the 2016 Rio Olympics signed off with an exhilarating closing day in Brazil.

Here's how the overall medal table looks at the end of the 2016 Summer Games:

Recap

Day 16 of the Summer Games proved to be one filled with controversy, and it's perhaps no surprise some of the greatest drama was saved until the closing day after a fortnight in the Brazilian heat.

One of the greatest topics of discussion was Joyce's failure to capture gold in the men's super heavyweight boxing final, where Frenchman Yoka was dubbed the superior performer by the judges.

There was an echo of boos in Pavilion 6 as soon as the announcement was made, and there was a sense Joyce made contact with the heavier shots, despite Yoka enjoying what many might have called a "cleaner" display.

Irish contender and Rio quarter-finalist Michael Conlan also found himself on the bitter end of the judges at these Games, and he took to Twitter to show his sympathy for silver medallist Joyce:

It was also a fruitful day's work for Uzbekistan in the boxing ring, where Shakhobidin Zoirov and Fazliddin Gaibnazarov snatched gold in the men's flyweight and light welterweight divisions, respectively.

Shields flew a solo flag for the United States on Sunday and ensured they still had a strong finish to the boxing events, and NBC Olympics showed the youngster is by no means lacking in confidence:

There was nothing controversial about the United States' victory in the men's basketball final, however, where they mopped the floor with Serbia 96-66 to clinch a third successive gold in this event.

That win over Serbia provided perhaps the most emphatic finish to these Games Team USA could have hoped for, and Bleacher Report provided a glimpse at the roster that captured a historic three-peat:

Earlier on Sunday, wrestling fans saw their attention temporarily diverted away from the competitors, and medal wins for Ramonov and Snyder were subject to a considerable delay as a result.

That was after Mongolian Mandakhnaran Ganzorig lost his bronze-medal final against Uzbekistan's Ikhtiyor Navruzov due to a penalty for celebrating too early. Needless to say, the loser's coaches were not pleased with the manner in which their star missed out on a medal:

That was a bitter pill to swallow, but Ramonov and Snyder thankfully had more fortunate endings to their Olympic Games, particularly as the former notched a superiority win over Azerbaijan's Toghrul Asgarov in a little more than two minutes.

Kipchoge earlier became the second Kenyan in three Summer Games to win the men's marathon, while Feyisa Lelisa of Ethiopia took silver, and NBC Olympics confirmed American Galen Rupp clinched bronze:

While Kenya continued their dominance in the long-distance running, hosts Brazil also kept their grip on men's after defeating Italy in the decider, according to ESPN Stats & Info:

While Brazil were busy maintaining their stride in a field known to be one of their strengths, Denmark sealed a maiden medal in men's handball, beating France in the final to beat their previous best finish of fourth in 1984.

Denmark's women have won three handball gold medals in their history, but the men's side can now stake a claim to catching up on that tally with a breakthrough victory over two-time gold-medal winners France.
