Rio Medal Count 2016: Twitter Reacts to Standings and Saturday's Results

Joe PantornoAug 20, 2016

On the second-to-last day of the 2016 Summer Olympics from Rio de Janeiro, 30 sets of medals were given out across 17 different events.

For the host country, the biggest event was the men's soccer gold-medal match between Brazil and Germany from the Maracana, which needed penalty kicks before Neymar set the nation into celebration mode to settle a 1-1 draw.

On the track, Allyson Felix led the United States women's 4x400-meter relay team to gold as she continued to set the bar high for Olympic sprinters the same way the American women's basketball team continues to dominate the world.

Elsewhere on the track, when it came to long-distance running, American Matt Centrowitz took home gold in the men's 1,500 meters as he helped expand the country's healthy lead atop the medal count:

While the world's best athletes competed, millions of spectators took to Twitter with their reactions to each event.

After Neymar's heroics, which included a dazzling free kick in the first half of the gold-medal match, Brazil delivered its first-ever gold in men's soccer, ending a surprising drought for a world powerhouse that's won five World Cups:

With the weight of a nation on his shoulders, Neymar was able to step up as Brazil's last penalty taker and slot a perfectly executed attempt to the right side of the goal, impressing CBS Sports' Zach Harper:

Sydney Leroux Dwyer of the United States women's soccer team looked at it as a storybook ending:

In another notable team gold-medal final, the United States women's basketball team dominated Spain 101-72 to win its sixth straight gold medal, via Rio 2016:

It was the team's 49th straight win as a part of a 20-plus-year win streak. ESPN Insider's Kevin Pelton noted that one of its current members wasn't even around the last time they lost:

One of the elder stateswomen of the team, guard Diana Taurasi, scored 17 points in the win as she and her team found a big supporter in Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe:

Over to track and field, Centrowitz did something that no American had done for over 100 years, via Team USA:

It was too much of a coincidence for the Chicago Cubs, who haven't won a World Series since 1908, to ignore:

While Centrowitz broke a drought, Felix extended her Olympic record with gold in the 4x400, via SportsCenter:

Not to mention that she also helped Courtney Okolo, Natasha Hastings and Phyllis Francis continue the United States' dominance at the 4x400, winning for the sixth straight time at the Olympics, via NBC Olympics:

With just one more day of competition remaining in Rio before the closing ceremony, there's no way the United States can be caught in the medal count as it reaffirmed this summer that it is one of the most successful athletic nations in the world.
