Olympic Track and Field 2016: Women's 4x400M Relay Winners, Times and Results

Alec NathanAug 20, 2016

The United States has dominated the women's 4x400-meter relay for the last 20 years, and it continued to thrash the competition at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with a stellar gold-medal performance Saturday.

The U.S. has now won six straight gold medals in the women's 4x400-meter relay dating back to 1996 and has medaled in the event in all but one Olympics since it was introduced in 1972.

Jamaica nabbed silver following bronze-medal finishes in 2004, 2008 and 2012, while Great Britain broke through and captured the final spot on the podium. The bronze represents Great Britain's first Olympic medal in the event since 1992.

8Australia3:27.45

And here's a rundown of the latest medal count, which continues to feature the United States in the top spot:

Anchored by Allyson Felix, the United States was the heavy favorite entering the evening's proceedings.

Not only did the Americans own a record of established brilliance in the 4x400-meter relay, but the U.S. entered Saturday's final with the top time in qualifying: three minutes, 21.42 seconds—nearly a full second better than Jamaica's qualifying time (3:22.38).

Thanks to the win, Felix added to her record-setting trophy case with her sixth career Olympic gold medal. On Friday, Felix became the first woman to capture five gold medals in track and field by virtue of a victory in the 4x100-meter relay.

Felix also owns nine total medals and is tied for the lead with Merlene Ottey as the most decorated woman in Olympic track and field history.

While Felix may have fallen short in the individual 400 meters, settling for silver, her performance on the anchor leg gave the U.S. a final time of 3:19.06, which shattered the mark it set earlier in the year.

Post-Race Reaction

"This one wasn't an individual medal, and the great thing is I get to share it with these great friends," Felix said, per USA Today. "I am so blessed. Track and field is such a big part of my life. In track and field, there are always bumps in the road and each one of us had a unique journey to get here, but we pushed through."

Felix's teammate English Gardner evaluated her own performance: "The Beast came out today," she said, per Sports Illustrated's Chris Chavez. “I knew I had a job to do on that third leg. I always try to say that I want to make Allyson’s job a lot easier since she runs so many events."
