Olympic Triathlon 2016: Women's Individual Medal Winners, Times and Results

Adam WellsAug 20, 2016

The women's triathlon took center stage at the 2016 Olympics on Saturday, with USA's Gwen Jorgensen taking home a gold medal with a time of one hour, 56 minutes and 16 seconds.

Jorgensen ran the race everyone expected from her. She hung around the lead during the swimming and biking portions before pulling away late during the 6.2-mile run to secure her first Olympic gold medal.

Here are the official results from the women's triathlon in Rio de Janeiro:

Per the NCAA on Twitter, Jorgensen is the first American to win gold in the Olympic triathlon:

She entered the race as the favorite after winning 13 straight races from 2014 to 2015, including back-to-back World Championships.

The American star was also looking for Olympic redemption after a flat tire four years ago led to her finishing 38th.

Jorgensen's strength has always been in the running portion of the event, so if she was close coming out of the 25-mile bike portion, her path to a gold would be set up.

ESPN's Jen Lada noted that Jorgensen is no stranger to making up a deficit during her triathlon career:

During the bike portion of the race, the biggest divide happened when a group of 18 women built up a two-minute cushion over the rest of the field.

Switzerland's Nicola Spirig, who was the defending Olympic gold medalist in the triathlon, held the lead throughout the bike race. She tried to get someone from that bunch of 18 to pass her on the sixth lap in an effort to draft off a competitor, but no one would take the bait.

USA Today's Nancy Armour tweeted out the likely thinking from the women as they saw Jorgensen sitting in second position during the bike portion of the race:

Almost immediately after climbing off the bike, Jorgensen ran her way to the top of the standings. Spirig ran alongside her, with most of the field at least five seconds behind the duo.

Spirig was able to sit behind Jorgensen and finally catch some of the draft she sought during the bike race, though it wasn't going to be as effective because you can move faster on a bike than on your feet.

Jorgensen and Spirig began a game of cat and mouse around the 105-minute mark as they started to exchange the lead before sharing a few playful words, per EWN Sport:

Jorgensen was finally able to build a cushion early on the final lap, jumping nearly 10 seconds ahead of Spirig. That lead would only grow before the American star crossed the finish line with tears running down her face to earn gold.

Spirig ran a brilliant race to reach the medal podium once again. Great Britain earned a bronze thanks to Vicky Holland's strong performance, with countrywoman Non Stanford coming in fourth.

But this was Jorgensen's coronation four years after bad luck ended her Olympic run in London. She responded to that adversity by working nonstop—with the support of her husband, pro cyclist Patrick Lemieux, who gave up his athletic career so she could train for this moment—with Saturday being the culmination of all her hard work.
