The United States, featuring Mike Rodgers, Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Trayvon Bromell, appeared to finish third. All of the baton transfers seemed clean, but after the race, USA Track & Field announced the Americans were disqualified because of a bad pass.

On the first exchange, Rodgers passed the baton to Gatlin too early before entering the designated zone, via the NBC telecast.

USA Track & Field announced later in the evening that they have officially filed an appeal on the decision.

That gave the bronze medal to Canada, who finished 0.02 seconds behind the United States.

Bolt ran the fourth and final leg of the race alongside teammates Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmeade.

Heading into the final leg of the night, the Jamaicans, Americans and Japanese, who set the Asian record earlier at the Olympics, were within milliseconds of each other.

But once Ashmeade handed the baton to Bolt, the mercurial sprinter created plenty of separation despite an initial challenge from Japan's Aska Cambridge.

NBC Olympics had a sense of deja vu at the time of Bolt's finish:

For Bolt, it is the ninth gold medal in as many chances at the Games, as the 29-year-old likely finished his Olympic career in grand fashion, capping off a triple-triple:

It came just one day after he breezed to a win in his final individual event, the 200.

After that race, he didn't need any confirmation that he was one of the best Olympians ever, per Martin Rogers of USA Today:

"

I have proven to the world that I am the greatest. That is why I came here. That’s why it is my last Olympics. I can’t do anymore. I make people want to come and watch the sport and be involved in it. ... I have worked hard to be the best. I have proven to the world I have done great things. I am happy, Olympic champion again, that’s what matters.

"

With a 100 percent record over three different Olympic Games, that's a safe claim to make. Bolt's absence from the 2020 Games in Tokyo will be a noticeable one.
