Recap

There were two notable moments from Team GB's equestrian win. First, Nick Skelton's gold-medal finish made history, per the team:

In the process, 58-year-old Skelton became his nation's "second-oldest Olympic gold medallist," according to BBC Sport. Riding Big Star, Skelton won the jump off ahead of Sweden's Peder Fredricson and Canada's Eric Lamaze.

It was Ashleigh Johnson who inspired Team USA to a successful defense of its Olympic title in the water polo. The defiant goalkeeper consistently thwarted the Italians and provided the platform for a worthy 12-5 win.

There was further American success when Connor Fields won the BMX cycling final. He profited somewhat from disappointing showings from touted Australian pair Sam Willoughby and Anthony Dean.

Fields beat more fancied opposition to gold in the BMX final.

The former made a poor start to the single-run final race and never recovered, despite thriving in the semi-final heats. By contrast, Fields didn't win any of his heat races, per the Games' official site. Yet, he delivered his best when it counted, producing a determined ride to beat Dutchman Jelle van Gorkom to take the gold.

Fields' success was preceded by Alise Post winning silver for Team USA in the women's race.

It was also a strong day for China, currently second in the medal count. The nation collected two more medals from the women's 20-kilometre walk in the athletics track and field events when Liu Hong took gold and Lu Xiuzhi claimed the bronze.

There was also a gold for Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan after the men's badminton doubles. The pair won their final 2-1 against Malaysia, in a match decided on the final point, to make it yet another gold at these Games for China.

Their victory meant silver for Malaysia and bronze for Team GB pair Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis. The latter took to social media to celebrate his medal:

There are still gold medals to be won in the women's soccer event when Sweden meets Germany, as well as in wrestling.
