Rio Medal Count 2016: Twitter Reacts to Standings and Results on Friday
Once the United States was eliminated from the women's soccer competition at the Rio Olympics, the tournament became a wide-open affair.
Germany took full advantage of its opportunity and came away with the gold medal after beating Sweden in the final by a 2-1 margin.
It's the first gold medal for the German women in Olympic soccer:
The United States men's basketball team did not have an easy time of it, but it advanced to the gold-medal final with an 82-76 victory over Spain.
Klay Thompson led the way for the Americans, scoring 17 points in the first half and a team-high 22 points in the game.
Team USA will play Serbia in the championship game Sunday:
USA's Connor Fields won the gold medal in men's BMX racing Friday, powering his way to the run after falling behind teammate Nicholas Long.
It was redemption for Fields, who failed to make the podium four years ago in the London Olympics:
Like Fields, women's BMX cyclist Alise Post of St. Cloud, Minnesota, did not make the podium in her event in 2012. However, she changed that in a big way as she took the silver medal in Rio.
Post finished behind Mariana Pajon of Colombia, who defended the gold medal she won in 2012:

Sweden's Peder Fredricson may not have won the gold medal in Equestrian, but he put on a first-place performance once he got to the podium.
Fredricson took the silver, but once he got to the award ceremony, he dabbed like Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers. It was a memorable show put on by the 44-year-old horseman:
Make it nine gold medals for Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, who anchored his country's team in the 4x100-meter relay. Bolt and the Jamaicans won the event, with Japan finishing second and Canada finishing third after the United States was disqualified:
While the American men couldn't win the sprint relay, there was no denying the American women in the 4x100 relay. Led by anchor-leg runner Tori Bowie, the United States dominated Jamaica and rolled to the gold medal:
