Olympic 2016 Results: Tracking Friday's Medal Count for Each Country

Andy BaileyAug 19, 2016

Usain Bolt's sprint toward history continued Thursday night at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Bolt's win in the 200-meter dash made him the first man to win that event three times and the first man to pull off the double (winning the 100 and 200) three times. It pulled him closer to Carl Lewis for total gold medals won in track and field.

Lewis holds the record for gold medals in track and field events with nine. Bolt can secure his ninth with a win in the 4x100-meter relay, which he won in 2008 and 2012, on Friday.

That race and much more are on the docket for the final days of the 2016 Games. To stay up to speed with the medal count, see the live-updating tracker below.

Men's 4x100-Meter Relay

Following his dominant performance in the 200-meter dash, Bolt told NBC's Lewis Johnson that faster competitors may have pushed him to a better time:

Led by Justin Gatlin, Team USA's 4x100 team will look to provide that challenge to Bolt and his Jamaican countrymen.

"I'm happy to still be here (for the relays)," Gatlin told reporters after his semifinal loss in the 200, per CNN's James Masters. "I think the rivalry that I have with Usain, it's turned it into a professional wrestling feel. Everyone's cheering for Usain, but they have someone they have to boo against."

For the heels in this scenario to pull off the victory, Gatlin and his teammates will have to run the race of their lives against Bolt, Yohan Blake and Co. With the way Bolt is running in Rio, though, it's hard to imagine anyone crossing the finish line before him.

Women's 4x100-Meter Relay

On the women's side, the Americans had to win a race against the clock to make the final.

In Team USA's semifinal heat, the Brazilian relay team crossed into its lane, bumped Allyson Felix and caused a botched handoff.

“I got bumped coming into the exchange zone,” Felix said, per USA Today's Paul Myerberg. “It just completely threw me off balance. I tried to pull it together to get it to English [Gardner]. Maybe if I had one more step I could’ve, but I was falling as I was going to her.”

Brazil was disqualified, and the Americans got a chance to rerun. They had to run faster than 42.7 on an empty track to advance:

The time they logged, 41.77, wound up being the top qualifying time. That sets up a showdown with a Jamaican squad led by Elaine Thompson (the winner of the 100 and 200 at these Games) and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

Ashton Eaton Repeats in the Decathlon

Ashton Eaton, the defending Olympic champion in the decathlon, became the third man in history to win the event more than once. The Olympics' Twitter account congratulated him on his record-tying performance:

Following his 1,500-meter run, the final event in the decathlon, Eaton spoke with Johnson:

The only question left for Eaton is whether he'll try to pull off the three-peat at the Tokyo Games. He'll be 32 years old in 2020.
