Olympic 2016 Results: Saturday's Guide to View Live Medal Tally Updates

Tom SunderlandAug 20, 2016

It's been an exciting month of sport at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and although Saturday marks the beginning of the summer showcase's closing weekend, some of the biggest action has been saved for last.

Specifically, the track and field events on offer this Saturday are sure to light up a thrilling closing weekend, with no fewer than seven gold medals on offer across as many events.

Great Britain's Mo Farah will be hoping to bag his second gold of the Summer Games in the final of the men's 5,000 metres, while the women's 800-metre and high jump finals also promise major drama.

We discuss all that and more up ahead as we look toward Saturday's schedule and how it may impact the Olympic medal table.

Here's how the overall medal table looks entering the final weekend of Rio 2016:

Track and Field Extravaganza

Farah is just one headliner on Saturday's glittering list of attendees, but it also came to be that Great Britain's distance-running phenomenon almost never got the chance to defend his gold in the final.

That was after the Somalia-born athlete came within steps of taking a nasty tumble during qualifying, the same fate that befell him en route to victory in the 10,000-metre final last week, per NBC Olympics:

The 5,000 metres will be a completely different kettle of fish for Farah, who spoke to BBC Sport after qualifying for the final and appeared exhausted in the aftermath:

Almost certain to be Farah's last Summer Games, the "Mo-Bot" can bow out with four Olympic golds from as many finals from London 2012 and Rio 2016 if he wins on Saturday, with all of Britain behind him.

In the field, the women's high jump final is one event promising close competition, and the United States is sure to be one of those in contention for top spot on the podium after major success in qualifying, per Team USA:

Among that trio of high jump final qualifiers is Vashti Cunningham, who jumped the necessary 1.94 metres to make the cut, and NBC Olympics suggested athletic prowess may be in the genes:

The women in the 800-metre final will embark upon a crusade to break the longest-standing world record in existence, too, with Czechoslovakian Jarmila Kratochvilova's 1983 time of one minute, 53.28 seconds yet to be beaten.

We'll also bear witness to one of the most cosmopolitan men's javelin finals ever known, too, after the International Association of Athletics Federations attested to the variety on the start list:

Aside from those events, spectators can also look forward to finals in the men's 1,500 metres, not to mention 4x400-metre relays in both men and women's categories.

Just two days remain until the doors slam shut on Rio 2016, and Saturday's medal schedule means you won't want to miss a minute of the entertainment on show.
