Olympic 2016 Results: Friday's Live Updating Medal Count and Standings
Jamaica's Usain Bolt made more Olympic history at Rio 2016 on Thursday, as he won gold in the 200 metres to leave him just a 4x100-metre triumph away from an extraordinary third successive sprint treble.
It was a fantastic day for the United States in athletics, as Ashton Eaton became only the second man to successfully defend the Olympic decathlon title, Ryan Crouser triumphed in the shot put, and the men's and women's 400-metre hurdles were won by Kerron Clement and Dalilah Muhammad, respectively.
Great Britain continued their extraordinary Games and remained ahead of China in terms of gold medals won, as Jade Jones and Alistair Brownlee successfully defended their 2012 titles in taekwondo and triathlon, respectively, while Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark prevailed in sailing.
Hosts Brazil claimed their fifth gold of the Games in the men's beach volleyball final, with Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt beating Italian duo Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo.
Here's what the medal table looks like at the moment:
Bolt stated before his 200 metres that he felt he could break his own world record of 19.19 seconds, per Desmond Kane of Eurosport.
He did not succeed in his ambition, as he posted a time of 19.78, and he said after the race that his legs simply would not take him there, per TSN's Mark Masters:
It was a comfortable victory for the 29-year-old, though, and he will aim on Friday to claim an extraordinary ninth Olympic gold in the 4x100-metre relay.
Eaton and Crouser both made history as the former became the first man since Daley Thompson in 1984 to win back-to-back decathlon golds, while the latter broke a longstanding Olympic record with a throw of 22.52 metres, per BBC Sport:
Jones, 23, beat Spaniard Calvo Gomez 16-7 in the 57-kilogram final to claim her second gold, while Brownlee beat off strong competition from brother Jonny, who won silver, to take a second consecutive gold in triathlon.
The Guardian's Barney Ronay described the scene as the two Yorkshiremen crossed the line, with Jonny improving on his bronze medal from four years ago:
After heartbreak for the hosts when Germany prevailed in Wednesday's women's final, Brazil's men stepped up and took gold in front of a home crowd.
They had to come from behind in both sets but eventually prevailed 21-19, 21-17 over the Italians.
Along with the 4x100-metre relay finals—Jamaica, USA and Great Britain will all go for gold in the women's event—Friday's highlights also include the women's football final between Germany and Sweden and the hockey final, in which the Netherlands take on Team GB.
Bolt will be the main attraction as he bids to complete his treble, but with barely three days of action remaining, almost every event going has medal significance.
