Olympic Track and Field 2016: Live Results and Highlights from Aug 19
Usain Bolt closed the show and his Olympic career in style.
Bolt pulled away in the anchor leg of the men’s 4x100-meter relay on Friday night at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro to lead Jamaica to a gold medal in his final Olympic race.
He finishes his career by completing a third triple-triple, winning gold in the men’s 100 meter, 200 meter and 4x100-meter relay, and with an undefeated record in nine Olympic finals.
His ninth gold medal also ties him with American Carl Lewis and Finland’s Paavo Nurmi for the most all time in track and field.
Japan finished second and captured the silver medal.
Canada took the bronze after the United States, which finished third, was disqualified for a baton pass outside the exchange zone.
But the night wasn't all bad for Team USA.
The United States successfully defended its Olympic gold in the women’s 4x100-meter relay.
Tiana Bartoletta, Allyson Felix, English Gardner and Tori Bowie captured the gold medal ahead of Jamaica in a time of 41.01 seconds.
Bartoletta set the tone of the race before passing the baton to Felix, but it was Gardner who broke the U.S. away from the pack and allowed Bowie to bring it home to the finish line for gold.
Felix is the first woman to capture five gold medals in track and field.
Jamaica took the silver medal and Great Britain the bronze.
Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot captured gold in the women’s 5,000-meter race.
She passed heavy favorite Almaz Ayana of Ethiopia in the closing laps and set an Olympic-record time of 14:26.17.
Hellen Onsando Obiri of Kenya captured the silver.
Ayana, who earlier in the Games captured gold and set a world record in the women’s 10,000 meters, settled for the bronze after losing a substantial lead and fading badly down the stretch.
In the women’s pole vault, Greece’s Ekaterini Stefanidi captured the gold medal with a vault of 4.85 meters.
Sandi Morris of the United States took the silver, and Eliza McCartney of New Zealand the Bronze.
