Highly regarded Brazilian designer Rosa Magalhaes will be orchestrating the closing ceremony. She's earned praise for her direction of Rio's famous carnival, so it's likely she will showcase a lavish ensemble of visual art designed to highlight the host nation's culture.
However, there's also going to be more than one nod to the heritage of other Olympic nations. Specifically, Greece will hear its national anthem played, an ode to the country's widely regarded distinction as the originators of these Games, per Claudia Balthazar of the Latin Post.

The Japanese anthem will also be heard later on as a celebration of the nation's role as the home of the next Olympics. It's a fitting tribute since the ceremony will draw to a close with the Olympic torch being passed to representatives from Tokyo at the iconic Maracana Stadium as Brazil's participation ends.
Among the athletes carrying their nation's flag during the ceremony will be one decorated member of Team USA's gymnastics squad, according to NBC Olympics:
It's a just reward after Simone Biles collected four gold and one bronze medal during these Games.
The Tokyo team will also get to show off what it has planned for 2020. There'll be a "special eight-minute presentation" set to display "a mixture of cultural traditions and technological innovations from Japan," according to Fernanda Ezabella of the Games' official website.
At the moment, Kygo is the only confirmed musical act. He's set to perform his latest single, "Carry Me" with support from vocalist Julia Michaels, according to Billboard.com.
Kygo is being used in a key role as event organisers get ready to launch the Olympic Channel. The new digital platform's general manager Mark Parkman talked up the 24-year-old musician's expected impact, per Jasmine C. Johnson of Rio2016.com:
"Kygo and his music will be an important element of the Olympic Channel, where fans will be able to continue their excitement of Rio and the Olympic Games all year long.”

Organisers are keeping additional details under wraps, but expect at least one or two surprise appearances from some top performers.
