Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Twitter Reacts to Standings and Results on Thursday
Usain Bolt became the first man in history to win three straight gold medals in the 200-meter dash on Thursday at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
All that's left for his triple-triple (three straight Olympics winning the 100, 200 and 4x100) is the 4x100-meter relay.
In the decathlon, American Ashton Eaton successfully defended his title, earning gold for the second straight Games. He became the third man to win the event twice.
Earlier on the track, Team USA's Kerron Clement secured the gold in the men's 400-meter hurdles. It was his second gold in this event after landing the silver in 2008.
In the men's triathlon, brothers Alistair and Jonny Brownlee of Great Britain won gold and silver, respectively. It was the first time siblings went first and second in the event.
All that and much more took place in Rio on Thursday. To stay up to speed on the medal count, see the live-updating tracker below:
Throughout the day, Twitter was ablaze with reactions to all the events.
Of course, that included Bolt's dominant performance in the 200. After securing his eighth gold, ESPN Stats & Info tweeted he's won more sprinting gold medals than anyone else:
The account also shared that Bolt and Elaine Thompson were the first male-female duo from the same country to pull off the double at the same Olympics:
After the race, Bolt paid homage to LeBron James by doing his celebration, as noted by HoopsHabit:
Then, in the post-race interview, he lamented his lack of competition, per The Today Show:
Bolt wasn't the only big winner Thursday, as Twitter had plenty to say about Clement as well.
Following his gold medal-winning run, the U.S. Olympic Team tweeted his description of the race:
And USA Today noted that his medal was the first gold for Team USA on the track in Rio. The rest had been in field events.
It wasn't the first gold for Florida Gators athletes, though. Gators Olympics updated the medal count for its athletes, which is up to nine. That would be enough to put the Gators in the top 20 of the medal count if they were their own nation:
For the Brownlee brothers, their accomplishment has been years in the making. The Brownlee Foundation shared a photo of the two running as kids:
And the video of Thursday's race from NBC Olympics looks like the next episode in that story:
After the triathlon, Jonny shared a picture of the two flashing their medals:
The excellent run earned them congratulations from Leeds United's Liam Cooper:
In another grueling race, American Dalilah Muhammad won gold in the women's 400-meter hurdles. ESPN's Freddie Coleman summed it up well:
Muhammad's dominant performance earned her the first gold ever for an American woman in this event, per USC Athletics:
Finally, Eaton won the decathlon in record-setting fashion, as Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press noted:
His repeat was something that hadn't happened in more than 30 years, per ESPN Stats & Info:
The U.S. Olympic Team shared images of Eaton in action in all 10 events:
