Recap

Ren and Si dominated the field during the preliminaries, continuing the nation's fine showing in the diving events, and with defending champion Kim Kuk of North Korea failing to qualify for the final, the duo were seen as the favourites for the gold.

Australia's Melissa Wu was also expected to do well, and the USA had two athletes in the final in Jessica Parratto and Katrina Young.

Great Britain's Tonia Couch didn't get off to a fine start, scoring just 64.50 with her first dive of the final. The score immediately put her in last place, and with Benfeito taking the lead with an 81.60, things seemed dire.

Wu tucked into third place with her first dive, and Ren pushed her further down the standings, scoring 78.00. Parratto in turn overtook her rival with a 81.00, the same score Si managed, as the final got off to a flying start.

Meanwhile, TV presenter Helen Skelton-Myler had some fun at the expense of some of her BBC colleagues:

Couch didn't fare much better with her second dive, again failing to crack the 70-point mark, and her medal chances were all but gone at this point.

Roseline Fillion bagged the highest score of the night up until that point, an 85.80, and Benfeito couldn't back up her first dive, as Ren, Parratto and Si all passed her in the standings.

The third round started even worse for Couch, who clocked the lowest score of any dive so far when she failed to complete her tuck.

All eyes were on the battle for gold, however, where Ren smashed her third dive, scoring 94.05 to take the lead. Compatriot Si followed by three points, and Benfeito sat third after Parratto made a massive error with her attempt, creating a big splash.

Fillion suffered a similar fate in the fourth round, as her 47.85 dive all but ended her medal chances. Benfeito remained on pace with a 76.80, but the Chinese duo at the top were a cut above the rest.

Ren increased her lead with a 91.20, and with Si only managing a 79.20, the gap was more than 15 points entering the final round. Benfeito did enough to secure the bronze, and Ren didn't give Si any chance of completing a comeback with a fine 91.20 to win the gold.
