
2016 Summer Olympics Odds: USA Double-Digit Betting Favorite vs. Spain in Semis
The United States did not start off impressively against Argentina in the quarterfinals of the Olympic men’s basketball tournament, but the Americans had strong second and third quarters to pull away in a 105-78 rout that saw them cover the spread for just the second time in six games.
Team USA will now take on Spain in a rematch of the 2012 gold-medal game as 15.5-point betting favorites at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark.
The Argentines led 19-9 in the first quarter before the United States scored 16 of the last 18 points to go up 25-21 heading into the second. Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors totaled a game-high 27 points while Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers was the only other starter to score in double figures with 11.
However, Paul George (17 points) of the Indiana Pacers and DeMarcus Cousins (15) of the Sacramento Kings helped the team’s bench outscore Argentina by a 54-16 margin and cover the 23 points.
Spain knocked France out in the quarters for the second consecutive Olympics, this time in a 92-67 rout. The Spaniards were led by Nikola Mirotic of the Chicago Bulls with a game-high 23 points and easily beat the 5.5-point line.
Spain settled for silver following a 107-100 loss to the United States in London and remain the +1200 second choice (bet $100 to win $1200) to win gold in Rio behind their heavily favored opponent.
The Americans are is favored at -1200 (bet $1,200 to win $100) to take home the gold for the third straight time, while Australia also looms as a potentially dangerous opponent at +1300 in the other half of the bracket.
The Aussies led the United States 54-49 at halftime in Group A play before falling 98-88, and they are listed as 3.5-point favorites on the Rio Olympics odds against Serbia in the other semifinal matchup after crushing Lithuania 90-64 in the quarterfinals.
Patty Mills scored a game-high 24 points while Matthew Dellavedova added 15, as the duo combined to make nine of their 18 shots from behind the three-point arc in the blowout. The Serbians are +1800 to win gold and used a 34-14 third quarter to defeat Croatia 86-83 in the quarterfinals.
