Rio 2016: What to Watch on Summer Games' Closing Weekend Schedule

Tom SunderlandAug 20, 2016

The elite of sport will embark upon a mad dash for the finish line as the Rio 2016 Olympics come to a climactic finish on Sunday, with a jam-packed weekend in Brazil headlining the end of this summer's blockbuster event.

With dozens of medals still up for grabs, viewers from around the world will watch as athletes jump, lunge, box, dive and dash to be crowned Olympic champions in their field.

Great Britain's Nicola Adams will be among a select number in with a chance of defending her London 2012 gold in the final of the women's flyweight boxing, while hosts Brazil face Germany in the final of the men's football tournament.

Mo Farah is also in pursuit of further gold medals and will look to defend his crown in the men's 5,000 metres, while Tom Daley heads back to the diving board in the hunt for a place on the men's 10-metre podium.

We break down some of the biggest events taking place on this closing weekend of Rio 2016, and here's how the overall medal table looks heading into the final days of the Summer Games:

Nicola Adams Chasing Back-to-Back Gold

After another tough battle through the boxing rounds, Adams will have her second chance at Olympic gold on Saturday, when she'll meet Sarah Ourahmoune of France in a fight for the women's flyweight title.

Thursday's unanimous-decision win over China's Ren Cancan booked the Briton another place in the boxing final, and she took to Twitter in the aftermath to celebrate a deserved spot in the deciding showdown:

Ourahmoune, 34, will attempt to upset the odds and down the defending gold medallist in the final, but Adams' performances thus far have suggested she's fully capable of winning back-to-back golds.

Her win over London 2012 silver medallist Cancan on Thursday was a dominant one, and the 33-year-old is in line to give Great Britain another late push up the medal table.

Mo Farah's Hunt for the 'Double-Double'

(L-R) Britain's Mo Farah, USA's Hassan Mead, Uganda's Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei and USA's Bernard Lagat compete in the Men's 5000m Round 1 during the athletics event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on August 17, 2016.

Much of the track talk at these Summer Games have revolved around Usain Bolt and his search for the "Triple-Triple," but British distance-running superstar Farah has another major accolade in sight.

The 33-year-old qualified from his 5,000-metre heat on Wednesday with a time of 13 minutes, 25.25 seconds, but NBC Olympics showed the Briton almost suffered an untimely upset en route to the final:

Saturday will see Farah attempt to defend his Olympic gold medal in the 5,000 metres, and having already triumphed in the 10,000 metres with an emphatic comeback win, the signs pointing to a Rio double are strong.

Farah won gold in both events four years ago, and the Brazilian climate is proving just as prosperous for one of Britain's most consistent bastions, who remains on course for four golds from four in a four-year span.

Brazil Face Germany in Football Vendetta

It's been just over two years since Germany decimated Brazil 7-1 en route to winning the 2014 World Cup at the Maracana Stadium, and how fitting it is that the same venue will play host to Saturday's gold-medal encounter.

Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated has said a win in the under-23 tournament won't make up for the embarrassment of 2014, but the Selecao have plenty to play for all the same:

Both teams got their tournaments off to sluggish starts by their own standards but have each come to find form when it's counted and will battle with gold at stake in Rio de Janeiro.

Germany have joint-top scorers Serge Gnabry and Nils Petersen among their ranks, with six goals apiece, but Brazil will hope Barcelona superstar Neymar can lead the charge to gold when it matters most.
