Olympic 2016 Medal Count: Thursday's Updated Tally, List of Winners and Results

Rory MarsdenAug 18, 2016

Germany, Ukraine, Hungary and Spain all claimed Rio 2016 gold medals in the four canoe sprint finals at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas on Thursday.

Brazilian Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos added a bronze in the men's 200-metre canoe single to the silver he won in the 1000-metre event and took the hosts' total medal tally for the Games to 13.

Hungary's Danuta Kozak produced the most impressive performance of the day in the women's single 500-metre kayak as she won by a distance, while Iurii Cheban of Ukraine set an Olympic-best time to successfully defend his title in the 200-metre men's single canoe.

German pair Marcus Gross and Max Rendschmidt held off a late surge from Serbia in the final stages of the 1000-metre men's kayak double final to take gold.

They had opened up a big lead at the halfway stage and the victory never really looked in doubt, but Serbia's Marko Tomicevic and Milenko Zoric made a decent tilt at a remarkable comeback.

Spanish duo Saul Craviotto and Cristian Toro won the 200-metre men's kayak final with relative ease, but there was a huge scrap for silver.

Great Britain's Liam Heath and Jon Schofield eventually claimed the second spot by a photo finish after making a late surge for the line, per British Canoeing:

Kozak's victory saw her claim a fourth gold medal by some distance, while Emma Jorgensen of Denmark just edged out New Zealand's 200-metre star Lisa Carrington to take silver.

Later on Thursday, Jamaica's Usain Bolt was back in action as he looked to complete the second leg of an historic third successive sprint treble in the men's 200-metre sprint final. He did exactly that with a time of 19.78 seconds, beating out silver-medalist Andre De Grasse of Canada (20.02 seconds) and bronze-medalist Christophe Lemaitre (20.12 seconds).

The eight-time Olympic gold medalist previously stated that he thought he could break the world record in the event, per Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan:

While he didn't do that, he proved once again he is one of the best Olympic athletes of all time.

Also in the athletics, the United States' Ashton Eaton successfully defended his London 2012 decathlon title, a feat not achieved since Great Britain's Daley Thompson won back-to-back gold medals in 1980 and 1984.

Meanwhile, after Brazil's women had to settle for silver in the beach volleyball after losing to Germany on Wednesday, the men's team of Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt took care of Italy in straight sets to secure the country's second gold medal in the event.

Brazil has now medaled in men's beach volleyball in every Olympics dating back to the 2000 Games in Sydney.
