Olympic Track and Field 2016: Live Results and Highlights from Aug. 18
Usain Bolt did it.
He won the 200-meter dash in a labored (for him) time of 19.79 seconds ahead of Canada's Andre de Grasse and France's Christophe Lemaitre.
Bolt lived up to the billing and won going away. He's eight-for-eight in gold-medal races while making it three straight Olympics with golds in his two marquee events. He has one more shot at a gold medal in the 4x100-meter relay and he'll relish it the entire time.
The showdown for the title of "World's Greatest Athlete" in the decathlon concluded as Ashton Eaton sprinted to the finish in the 1,500 meters and won his second straight gold medal in the decathlon with an Olympic-record 8893. All the hype, realized, by 9:03 p.m. in Rio. France's Kevin Mayer took silver, and Canada's Damian Warner won the bronze.
Ryan Crouser won the gold medal in the shot put, with Joe Kovacs taking silver, making it two medals for Team USA.
The women's 4x100 meter relay turned into a shocking event as the defending champions, Team USA, initially failed to qualify after Allyson Felix and English Gardner were unable to complete a handoff. However, the Americans appealed and were granted another opportunity to qualify after it was deemed they dropped the baton only after a Brazilian runner bumped them.
They ran against the clock and subsequently clocked the fastest qualifying time (41.77 seconds) and will run in the finals tomorrow night. Woe be to China, who got bumped out as a result.
The reigning gold medalists made the most of the opportunity and will run in Friday night's final.
What a night for Team USA and what a night for Bolt, who delivered on his promise.
