Team GB Athlete Robbed, Reportedly Held Up at Gunpoint During 2016 Rio Olympics
A member of the Great Britain Olympic team has been robbed while in Rio de Janeiro at the 2016 Games and was reportedly held at gunpoint during the incident.
Per BBC Sport, the incident took place as the athlete returned to their accommodation. A spokesman for Team GB confirmed an "incident of theft" while also establishing the safety of the delegation: "All members of our delegation, including the individual concerned, are accounted for and are safe and well."
According to the Guardian's Sean Ingle, the individual in question was "held up at gunpoint while enjoying a night on the town," and the incident has prompted a warning to Team GB members not to take the risk of leaving the athletes' village.
Ingle added that there are concerns athletes will be targeted if they leave the village wearing Team GB kit.
The team have been reminded not to wear official GB kit away from the village or to take local taxis, per an email sent out to athletes (via Ingle):
"Avoid leaving the village after dark in anything other than British Olympic Association/Local Organising Committee/UK Athletics transport—taxis cannot be considered safe late at night. If you are planning on going out after dark and have no way of returning other than via taxi, do not go out.
Do not go out of the village wearing Team GB kit or carry anything of value unless absolutely unavoidable—this makes you too big a target for theft/crime.
You MUST inform a member of team management if you are leaving the village and planning on staying out overnight—please do this BEFORE you leave.
"
The athletes were also reminded of their duty to attend a BOA security briefing after they have finished competing. Further, they labelled Rio as "not a safe environment" and stated that a general ban on leaving the village after dark could be introduced if further problems arise.
Team GB are not the only group to have been affected by security problems during Rio 2016.
United States swimmers Ryan Lochte, James Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint by four men dressed as police officers, though that is now in question.
Safety concerns have also been cited among a number of other reasons why turnout at the various Olympic venues has been so low, per Sports Illustrated's Tim Layden:
Rio 2016 will finish on Sunday with the closing ceremony at Rio's famed Maracana Stadium.
