Aside from the obvious sporting spectacle on display at each and every Olympics, the opening and closing ceremonies also bring a sense of prestige and anticipation regarding who will light up the stage.
The Olympic Channel recently confirmed one of their major headliners for Sunday's closing ceremony, too, with the news that DJ and producer Kygo would be a part of the celebrations:
The Norwegian, best known for his dance-music chart-topper "Firestone," also took to his official Twitter account to announce his excitement at the prospect of performing at the Maracana:
Rio de Janeiro carnival designer Rosa Magalhaes will serve as creative director for the closing ceremony, which is certain to follow the summer blockbuster opening ceremony as a fine illustration of Brazil's culture and heritage.
One of those native celebrities hoping to make the closing ceremony is former Brazil striker Pele, who took to Twitter earlier in August and expressed his hopes of being in attendance:
The Brazili icon was absent from the opening ceremony due to poor health, but his presence alone could have a morale-boosting effect on the festivities, such is his influence in his native land.
The official Rio 2016 website outlined the closing ceremony as an opportunity to celebrate the excitement of the Olympics, as well as "that special feeling of looking back at the Games’ best moments."
Much of the closing ceremony will remain wrapped in mystery until the night of the event, with many more surprises and big faces sure to be revealed at the Maracana on Sunday.
