Georgia's Lasha Talakhadze made history Tuesday in the men's over-105-kilogram weightlifting event at the 2016 Summer Olympics, as he set new Olympic and world records en route to winning the gold medal.
Talakhadze lifted a combined 473 kilograms between the snatch and the clean and jerk, which pushed him to the top of the podium ahead of Armenia's Gor Minasyan.

Following Talakhadze's record-breaking performance, the Olympics' official Twitter account congratulated him and provided a photo of him accomplishing the impressive feat:
Georgia has a long history of success in weightlifting, but Talakhadze's gold was just the second Olympic gold medal the nation has ever earned in the sport and the first in the super heavyweight division.
Armenia won men's super heavyweight bronze in 2008, and Minasyan's silver set a new high-water mark for the country in that division.
Also, per Andre Khatchaturian of NESN, Minasyan continued what was already a successful day for Armenia in Rio:
The Armenians just missed out on a second medal in the event, as Ruben Aleksanyan finished in fourth, eight kilograms behind Turmanidze.
Also, host Brazil came close to winning its first-ever medal in weightlifting with Fernando Saraiva Reis coming in fifth.
Iran has traditionally dominated super heavyweight weightlifting, winning gold in 2000, 2004 and 2012, but Behdad Salimikordasiabi was unable to complete a clean and jerk, and he did not register a score.
