Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Twitter Reacts to Standings and Results on Tuesday

Chris RolingAug 16, 2016

The United States hit cruise control Tuesday, continuing to sit comfortably atop the medals race in both gold and overall categories thanks to big performances by names such as Christian Taylor and Simone Biles.

Behind the United States, Great Britain and China continued to jockey for position on the leaderboard while other incredible Olympic moments defined Tuesday's action.

Twitter, of course, was there for all of it.

The United States got a leg up on the competition early Tuesday thanks to Taylor's performance in the men's triple jump.

Taylor made history while seizing the gold, jumping a ridiculous 17.86 meters to narrowly best fellow countryman and eventual silver medalist Will Claye.

ESPN Stats & Info provided the staggering depth of the achievement:

Biles helped America's gymnastics team make a bit of history Tuesday, too.

Biles was dominant as expected on the floor routine, grabbing her fourth gold of the Games while Aly Raisman finished just behind her. As Liz Clarke of the Washington Post pointed out, the effort made the team the most decorated of all time:

On an individual level, Biles received plenty of noteworthy praise. A household name like Shawn Johnson had plenty to say about the performance:

Raisman received plenty of praise as well, the most notable coming from Shannon Miller, the most decorated gymnast in Team USA history:

On the men's side of gymnastics, Team USA's Danell Leyva came up just short behind Germany's Fabian Hambuechen in the horizontal bars event. What was impressive from Leyva, though, was his also finishing with silver on the parallel bars to give him two medals on the day.

NBC Latino provided some history around Leyva's accomplishments:

Even more impressive? As Elon Local News' Brooke Wivagg pointed out, Leyva entered the Games as an alternate:

Great Britain was one of the countries to watch alongside China in terms of those hot on the heels of the United States. Laura Trott helped boost the former Tuesday with a gold medal in the women's omnium event, while Jason Kenny took gold in the men's keirin.

Trott herself took to Twitter to post some of the absolute best reactions to the Games thus far:

Also helping Great Britain keep pace with the United States, or at least push away China on the medal table, was Giles Scott, who took gold in the men's finn.

Team GB captured his reaction and context:

China, for what it's worth, carved out a gold in the table tennis realm, securing its third such medal at the Games since the sport was introduced in 2008. Li Xiaoxia won her finals match, as did Liu Shiwen before the doubles portion saw Ding Ning and Shiwen combine to dismiss Germany.

The rest of the day was an interesting bag of medal performances.

For example, Russia scored a gold medal and bested noteworthy countries China and Japan in the women's synchronized swimming duets event thanks to an incredible performance by Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina.

Elsewhere in the pools, the Netherlands' Ferry Weertman put on an incredible display of endurance in the men's 10-kilometer swim. As Swimming World pointed out, it was one of the most hotly contested events on the day because silver medalist Spiros Gianniotis finished with the same time as the winner:

As expected, Jamaica ruled the world of sprinting again, with Omar McLeod taking home the gold medal in the men's 110-meter hurdles.

NCAA Track & Field was quick to point out McLeod was the first from his country to sit atop the podium in the event:

Sports Illustrated's Chris Chavez noted the lack of American names at the podium:

The host country Brazil was another huge winner on the day, as underdog Robson Conceicao took home the gold in the men's 60kg boxing final. Conceicao flat out dominated the first two rounds against France's Sofiane Oumiha to tally the decision.

With the triumph, Conceicao became Brazil's first gold medalist in boxing. BBC Sports' Conor McNamara captured the amazing scene:

It's moments such as those that make the Games worth it even if a country isn't in the thick of the race at the top of the leaderboard.

Wednesday promises more history, with medals up for grabs in events such as boxing, volleyball and a bevy of track and field events. Rest assured Twitter will be along for the ride every step of the way to immortalize the best moments and reactions.
