Aly Raisman Comments on Future in Gymnastics After 2016 Rio Olympics

Alec NathanAug 16, 2016

American gymnast Aly Raisman wrapped up her stellar 2016 Olympic run on Tuesday with a silver in the women's floor exercise final, and the 22-year-old left the door open for a potential return to the international stage in four years after she hit the podium.

"I said I get better [with] age, so maybe I will," Raisman said when asked if she would compete in the 2020 Olympics, according to Team USA's Nick McCarvel

McCarvel added that Raisman is "seriously considering" an appearance in Tokyo but that she will need to think about it in the months ahead.

Raisman burst on the scene in 2012 with three medals in London, and she didn't slow her roll in Rio de Janeiro.

Not only did the veteran capture silver in the floor exercise final and silver in the individual all-around, but she helped lead the Red, White and Blue to a historic team all-around victory.

Raisman participated in vault, balance beam and floor exercise in the win, which came by a whopping 8.209 points. According to CBS Sports' Robby Kalland and Matt Norlander, that margin stands as the largest ever at a major gymnastics meet.

"I feel really good at 22, and I can't wait to see what is to come," Raisman said of her future, according to Reuters' Mary Milliken

Considering Raisman will be 26 years old by the time the 2020 Olympics roll around, it would be a bit surprising to see her still competing on the world's biggest platform.

As a point of reference, no other American gymnast representing the Stars and Stripes in Rio is older than 20 years old. Plus, the International Gymnastics Federation announced in May 2015 that team sizes will be reduced to four members beginning in 2020.

That said, Raisman was exceptional in all phases throughout the 2016 Games as she helped the U.S. gymnastics team finish with an American-record 12 medals.

And given the polish she continued to flash on floor, Raisman could be an invaluable leader for the United States as it seeks to defend its international crown four years down the line.
