Taking place at the Maracana Stadium, the same venue as the opening ceremony, Sunday night's festivities will once again give Brazil an opportunity to show the world its creative vibrancy, via cc2016.br:
"[Olympic opening and closing ceremonies are always] a unique and impactful creation, in which local culture is magnificently and imaginatively portrayed, imprinting lifelong memories on the stadium audience and tv spectators.
[...]
Besides being a living and pulsating portrait of the host city, capable of translating Brasilian diversity and joy to embrace the whole world at once, the Ceremonies are also an opportunity to rekindle the Olympic values and ideals such as respect, friendship and excellence.
"
The responsibility of heading such a project has been given to renowned Brazilian set and costume designer Rosa Magalhaes, who won an Emmy Award for her costume designs at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Pan American Games.
While she will provide the backdrop for Sunday, some big names will provide the entertainment for the fans on hand.
On Tuesday, Billboard.com confirmed that Norwegian musical artist Kygo will perform at the closing ceremony:
"Despite Kygo's Norwegian nationality, he makes some pretty groovy tropical music. If his festival headlining appearances weren't enough of a vote of confidence, the country of Brazil will now open its arms to his coconut-scented sounds when Kygo takes the stage at the Rio Olympic Closing Ceremony.
"
He'll be performing his hit song "Carry Me" alongside vocalist Julia Michaels as one of the headlining artists on the night.
There's a chance they could be playing in front of Brazil's greatest athlete of all time, too. Soccer legend Pele, who won three World Cups with his country, was unable to make the opening ceremony due to health concerns.
Just days later, though, he made it clear that he was doing everything he could to get back to the Maracana for Sunday:
While it's unclear what kind of role he'll have in the festivities, having the nation's biggest name on hand to close out the world's grandest sporting event is only fitting as Brazil passes on the Olympic host flag to Tokyo for the 2020 Summer Games.
