Olympic 2016 Results: Tracking Tuesday's Medal Count for Each Country

Steve SilvermanAug 16, 2016

It was deja vu all over again for United States triple jumpers Christian Taylor and Will Claye.

Four years ago, those two former Florida Gators went 1-2 in the 2012 London Olympics in the triple jump. Fast forward to Tuesday morning, and those two had the same results in Rio.

Both men set the tone with their early jumps. Taylor, who set a goal of breaking a new world record in the event, had his longest jump of the day on his first attempt. Claye, who went shortly thereafter in the 12-man field, followed with his best jump as well.ย

Taylor's mark of 17.86 meters was good for the gold, while Claye's jump was just slightly behind at 17.76 meters.

Taylor is the first American man to win multiple gold medals in a field event since Carl Lewis. However, he did not set a world record in the event.

There's still quite a bit of action left on Tuesday's schedule, with more medals ready to be handed out. To stay up to speed with all the action, see the live-updating medal count below:

Usain Bolt took the first step toward winning his second gold medal of the Rio Olympics as he breezed through the 200-meter heat with a time of 20.28 seconds.

American Justin Gatlin, Bolt's top rival, also made it through his opening heat without a problem by posting a time of 20.42 seconds.

Bolt retained his unofficial title as the "World's Fastest Human" with his victory over Gatlin in the 100m, but the 200m may be his best event.

Bolt said he was still tired from his work in the 100-meters and he also said he was not fond of running in the morning. However, the Jamaican's form looked free and easy and he did not appear to be laboring during his race.

Gatlin came through with a time of 20.19, but the American said the only reason he went that fast is that he was pushed hard by Japan's Abdul Hakim Sani Brown.

โ€œBut now Iโ€™m going for 200 meters," Gatlin said. "I have two days to go. My race would have been slower but Sani pushed me so much. This young guy from Japan is phenomenal.โ€

Matthew Centrowitz

Americans Matthew Centrowitz, Robby Andrews and Ben Blankenship all advanced to the 1,500-meter semifinal at Olympic Stadium.

Centrowitz and Andrews were automatic qualifiers in their heat, while Blankenship made it to the second round based on his time of 3:38.92.

Centrowitz and Andrews finished fifth and third, respectively, in their heats. The top six runners in each of the three heats advanced, as did the next six fastest times.

Centrowitz finished fourth in the 1,500 meter in the London games, and he will try to lead the American contingent to the medal stand. The semifinals of the event are scheduled for Thursday night.
