Top Event to Watch: Men's Soccer Gold-Medal Match

Brazil and Germany are arguably the top two soccer-playing nations in the world, and they will clash Saturday in perhaps the most highly anticipated men's gold-medal match in the history of the Olympics.

Despite how dominant Brazil and Germany have been in the sport over the years, neither has ever won an Olympic gold medal as a unified nation.

Brazil took silver four years ago in London, and while East Germany did win Olympic gold in 1976, Germany is without a medal in Olympic men's soccer since the German reunification in 1990.

One of those droughts will end Saturday, and it will be in front of a raucous Rio crowd that will undoubtedly be firmly behind the home squad.

When Germany secured its spot in the final with a win over Nigeria after Brazil blew out Honduras, Brazilian soccer legend Pele tweeted the following:

While Brazil will have a ton of support, the pressure to win gold on home soil will be massive. In addition to that, Germany embarrassed the Brazilians 7-1 in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which heightens the expectations for redemption even more.

Despite Brazil getting shellshocked by Germany in the World Cup, Brazilian head coach Rogerio Micale insisted that his team will enter the final with the utmost confidence, according to Selecao Brasileira:

Defender Marquinhos added that Brazil isn't worried about how it has fared against Germany in the past:

In the final, Brazil will have the advantage of boasting the best player on the pitch in the form of Barcelona star Neymar. Brazil is also on an impressive roll after failing to score in each of its first two contests, as it has outscored its opponents 12-0 over its past three games.

Germany has looked like an attacking juggernaut throughout the Games, though, with 21 goals in five matches.

Arsenal youngster Serge Gnabry has led the way with an Olympics-leading six goals, and his play will be key in counteracting the dominance of Neymar.

While many of the names in Saturday's gold-medal match will be unfamiliar to casual soccer fans since the rosters are made up largely of young players, the cachet of Brazil versus Germany in Rio de Janeiro is enough to make it one of the must-see events of the 2016 Summer Olympics.
