Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Tuesday Results, Standings and Latest Reaction

James DudkoAug 16, 2016

Germany, Spain, Poland and Hungary were all among the medal winners after the canoeing finals at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.

Spaniard Marcus Walz capped the day's events by taking gold in the men's 1,000-metre kayak single race. Earlier, Germany's Sebastian Brendel had started the day by claiming the top medal for the men's canoe single 1,000-metre event.

There was also good news for current medal-count leaders Team USA, who added two more prizes after the men's triple jump final.

Here's what the medal count looks like at the Games with these events now in the books:

Recap

Brendel completed a successful defence of his Olympic title after a late surge left Brazilian Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos trailing. Dos Santos had kept things close for much of the race even though Brendel always held the advantage.

In the end, Brendel had posted an impressive finishing time of three minutes, 56.926 seconds, per the competition's official site. It was an advantage of just under two seconds ahead of dos Santos.

Brendel and dos Santos couldn't be separated for most of the race.

Later in the day, it was Walz's turn to win the big race, this time in the kayak event. The athlete who grew up in Spain but was born in Oxford, England, paddled his way from fifth to first in a frantic last stage to the race.

Walz finished in 3:31.447, marginally ahead of the Czech Republic's Josef Dostal, who posted a final time of 3:32.145. Russia's Roman Anoshkin earned the consolation of bronze from a race that was closely fought the entire way.

Christian Taylor and Will Claye took gold and silver, respectively, for Team USA after fine performances in the triple jump. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports confirmed how the pair had repeated identical previous successes:

As Paul Myerberg of USA Today Sports also noted, Taylor virtually ended "the competition before it began" by travelling 17.86 metres on his first jump.

There was more good news for Team USA when the female athletes added two more medals in the floor exercise final. The gold went to Simone Biles, who made up for only managing bronze in Monday's balance beam event.

However, silver winner Aly Raisman made history for her country, according to NBC Olympics:

Dutch swimmer Ferry Weertman won the men's 10-kilometre swimming marathon. He battled back to close the gap on Australian Jarrod Poort, who at one point held a lead of over a minute.

Yet, as SwimSwam pointed out, Poort gradually lost his advantage as others gained on him:

There are more medals up for grabs in the boxing, diving and cycling as the day unfolds. Laura Trott can secure another gold for Great Britain if she successfully completes the women's omnium race. She's already in a strong position, holding an eight-point advantage, per BBC Sport.

Similarly, Joshua Buatsi can claim at least bronze when he faces Kazakhstan boxer Adilbek Niyazymbetov in the men's light heavy 81-kilogram semifinal.
