Queiroz dos Santos won gold in the 500-metre canoe sprint at the 2013 and 2014 world championships and was expected to have a fast start.
However, he was matched brilliantly to the halfway stage by Brendel as the two broke from the pack to fight for silver and gold.

The German finished the stronger to take the victory, while Moldova's Serghei Tarnovschi edged out Ilia Shtokalov for bronze.
Hungarian duo Gabriella Szabo and Danuta Kozak held off a charge from Germans Franziska Weber and Tina Dietze in the women's kayak double 500 metres to take victory by just five hundredths of a second.
And Carrington then powered from fourth to the front in the final 80 metres to add another gold from Rio 2016 to her London triumph four years ago, per Sky Sport NZ's Scotty Stevenson:
In the women's laser radial, Annalise Murphy won Ireland its first sailing medal in 36 years, grabbing silver after finishing the final race in fifth. Marit Bouwmeester took home the gold.
Simone Biles bounced back from her third-place finish in the balance beam event to dominate the floor, grabbing her fourth gold medal of the 2016 Games.

Great Britain once again dominated on the track, as Laura Trott and Jason Kenny added to their collection of gold medals, winning the women's omnium and men's keirin, respectively.
Compatriots Becky James and Katy Marchant also medaled, grabbing silver and bronze in the women's sprint behind Kristina Vogel of Germany.
