Olympic Cycling 2016: Men's Track Sprint Medal Winners, Times and Results

Tyler ConwayAug 14, 2016

Coming into the final, we knew the cycling track sprint gold medal was headed back to Great Britain. The only thing left to answer was whether upstart Callum Skinner could knock off legend Jason Kenny.

In a word: nope.

Kenny earned his fifth career gold medal Sunday, defeating Skinner in consecutive races to take the track sprint gold at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The 28-year-old defended the gold he won four years ago in London in fine form, dominating the first race and holding Skinner off in the second despite the 23-year-old turning in an excellent performance.

"For me, Callum Skinner has been the rider of the Games," British cyclist Chris Hoy said, per BBC Sport. "To come from relative obscurity and to win a gold in the team sprint and to win a silver here, you can't underestimate how good an achievement that is."

In his third Olympic Games, Kenny has become one of the most decorated Brits in history. His five golds are one behind Hoy for the most among British cyclists. He's now tied with Bradley Wiggins and Steve Redgrave for the second most of all time.

Kenny, who also captured the sprint gold at the World Championships in London this year, has been part of each of the last three British Olympic teams. He's earned three golds in the team competition and a pair in the individual sprint, and he took silver as a 20-year-old at the 2008 Games. With the keirin still left on his plate in Rio, Kenny could match Hoy by the time he leaves.

Kenny was also in fine form after the race, as Jane Garvey of the BBC noted:

Sweeping the top two medals in the men's sprint brought Great Britain's count up to 37 overall. Its 14 golds are tied with China for the second most. The United States remains dominant in the overall medal count with 66, including 26 golds.

Denis Dmitriev added to Russia's count by defeating Matthew Glaetzer for the bronze medal. Dmitriev lost his semifinal to Kenny but rebounded with a strong performance against Glaetzer, winning both races. Russia sits fourth in the overall medal count with 29.
