Gianni VerschuerenAug 14, 2016

Max Whitlock of Great Britain added a second gold medal to his tally on Sunday, beating compatriot Louis Smith to the top spot in the pommel horse just hours after winning the floor event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Whitlock's routine wasn't as clean as that of Smith, but he showed more creativity and took plenty of risks to grab the gold. Alexander Naddour of the USA completed the podium.

Here's a look at Sunday's medal winners and their final scores:

Recap

Whitlock entered the final with plenty of momentum, as he had grabbed a gold medal in the floor event just hours earlier and his night could have already been considered a success. As shared by BBC Sport, he became the first British man to win a gold medal in gymnastics:

The pommel horse is normally Whitlock's favoured event, so fans were buzzing, hoping for even more success. Teammate Smith also featured in the final, hoping to make up for his errors in the team event.

Cyril Tommasone of France started the final with an excellent routine, finishing with a score of 15.600 to set the bar. Russia's David Belyavskiy finished with a score of 15.400, as the final got off to an excellent start.

Naddour really kicked things into gear with clean lines and a solid dismount, bettering Tommasone's score and impressing Inside Gymnastics:

All-around silver medalist Oleg Verniaiev fell during his routine, effectively ending his medal chances, before Smith had his turn.

The 27-year-old was selected with an eye on this apparatus, and he didn't disappoint, gradually increasing the difficulty of his routine and barely making any mistakes. A score of 15.833 and the lead with four athletes still to come was the result.

Broadcaster Dan Lobb loved it:

The result guaranteed at least one medal for the Brits, with Whitlock still to come, and after Harutyun Merdinyan's routine only yielded a score of 14.933, Smith knew he would end on the podium.

Whitlock started vertically and showed plenty of creativity with his set, although he didn't perform as cleanly as Smith. He finished very strongly, however, and the score of 15.966 put him in the lead with one more athlete to go.

Russia's Nikolai Kuksenkov started with an error, all but gifting Whitlock the gold, with Smith and Naddour completing the podium.
