Olympic Medals 2016: Tracking Sunday Winners, Results and Final Tally

Tom SunderlandAug 14, 2016

The men's 100-metre final is the showcase in a jam-packed Sunday schedule of sporting entertainment at the Rio 2016 Olympics, but the women's marathon ensured the day got off to a slightly slower-paced start.

Kenya's Jemima Sumgong took gold in the 26-mile blockbuster after finishing the course in a time of two hours, 24 minutes and four seconds, while Eunice Kirwa of Bahrain and Ethiopia's Mare Dibaba took silver and bronze, respectively.

World champion Dibaba looked capable of challenging for Olympic gold, too, early on Sunday, but the furious pace-setting of Sumgong ultimately proved too much for her and Kirwa.

A stacked schedule of medal events sees podium places up for grabs in shooting, sailing, weightlifting, wrestling and gymnastics before the Olympic Stadium takes centre stage late in the day.

Here's how the standings look after Saturday's results:

Sumgong Clinches Kenya Maiden Win

The first medal of Sunday's schedule also happened to be the first gold medal ever won by a Kenyan woman in the marathon event, even with the nation's elite standing as a distance-running powerhouse.

The official Rio 2016 Twitter account confirmed a maiden win for the Kenyans in this event, although Sumgong was still almost four minutes slower than her recorded personal best:

There was a convincing nine-second gap between the victor and Kirwa, who flew a strong flag for her country and became the first Bahraini woman to medal in the marathon event.

Kirwa looked capable of taking gold at points during the race, but second place was ultimately all she deserved after Sumgong timed her break to perfection.

Dibaba, meanwhile, fell away from the leader pack at around the 35-kilometre mark, as did Ethiopian countrywoman Tirfi Tsegaye, who was the leader for a short period 15 kilometres from the end.

It was a particular surprise to see the American trio of Shalane Flanagan, Desiree Linden and Amy Cragg finish in the top 10, via the International Association for Athletics Federations:

Not only that, but the United States contingent took up a third of the top nine finishers themselves, an unprecedented result for American distance running.

It's been a long time coming, but Sumgong ensured Kenya finally broke one mark that had eluded them for decades, with Kenya having claimed silver in the previous three Summer Games.
