Olympic Track and Field 2016: Women's Heptathlon Medal Winners, Times, Results
Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam took home the gold medal in the women's heptathlon Saturday with a total score of 6,810 over two days of competition at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
She won by 35 points over defending gold medalist Jessica Ennis-Hill of Great Britain, who secured the silver, while Brianne Theisen-Eaton of Canada took the bronze.
Here's a look at the final results:
| Gold | Nafissatou Thiam | Belgium | 6,810 |
| Silver | Jessica Ennis-Hill | Great Britain | 6,775 |
| Bronze | Brianne Theisen-Eaton | Canada | 6,653 |
Thiam headed one of the best fields ever to compete in the heptathlon, as this was the first time in Olympic history that six women recorded a score of 6,500 or higher, per the IAAF.
Thiam used victories in three of the seven events to fuel her gold-medal performance. The Olympics congratulated her on Twitter:
After finishing 12th in the 100-meter hurdles to start the competition, Thiam won the high jump with a world-record mark of 1.98 meters.
She followed that up with a win in shot put, launching her best attempt 14.91 meters.
A 24th-place finish in the 200 meters wasn't ideal, but she answered in perfect fashion by winning the long jump.
The second-to-last event, the javelin throw, all but clinched the gold for her, as she finished in third with a mark of 53.13 meters before ending with a 19th-place showing in the 800-meter run.
