Olympic 2016 Results: Saturday's Medal Winners, Highlights for Each Event
Swimming came to a close, and track and field took center stage at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.
In the pool, medals were handed out for the women's 50-meter freestyle and the men's 1,500-meter freestyle. Michael Phelps swam what may be his final race in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay.
In track and field, golds were awarded in the men's 10,000 meter, the women's 100 meter and the men's long jump.
All that and more went down on Saturday. To stay up to speed on all the action, follow the live-updating medal count below:
Jamaica Reigns Again in the 100
After Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce took the gold in the women's 100-meter sprint in 2012, Elaine Thompson defended the crown for the nation in 2016.
With a time of 10.71 seconds, Thompson cruised to the gold and won by over a tenth of a second. NBC declared Thompson the fastest woman in the world:
With a time of 10.83 seconds, America's Tori Bowie took the silver. USA Track and Field shared a picture of her run:
As for the defending champion, Fraser-Pryce took third and earned a congratulations from countryman Usain Bolt:
Mo Farah, Mo Golds
Mo Farah, who won the gold in both the 10,000 and 5,000 during the 2012 London Games, defended his title in the 10,000 in dramatic fashion.
After falling in the first half of the race, Farah popped right back and returned to the front of the pack. His final kick, as shown by NBC, gave him the win by a comfortable distance:
Jeff Henderson Takes Flight
It came down to his final attempt, which was just enough to earn gold for USA's Jeff Henderson in the long jump. The IAAF posted a photo of the winner in action:
Henderson's last jump was 8.38 meters, edging out South Africa's Luvo Manyonga by just one one-hundredth of a meter.
Great Britain's Greg Rutherford, who won gold in this event in 2012, was understandably disappointed in his third-place finish afterward. BBC's Ollie Williams tweeted his reaction:
Last Night in the Pool
The swimmers are officially done in Rio, as action in the pool wrapped up Saturday.
Simone Manuel, who surprised a lot of people with her gold-medal-winning upset in the 100-meter freestyle, won silver in the 50-meter freestyle. She was a fingernail from gold, per Nathan Fenno of the Los Angeles Times:
She would not end the night without gold, though. She anchored the 4x100-meter medley relay, carrying Team USA to victory. USA Swimming congratulated Manuel and her teammates:
And to close the night, Team USA also won the men's 4x100-meter medley. The US Olympic Team immortalized the team in perfect 2016 fashion with a GIF:
For Phelps, if this truly is his last swim, he goes out with gold. That brings his ridiculous total to 23, which NBC depicted in comic book style:
Phelps is truly in a category all his own. Nine golds is enough for second place for most by an individual Olympian. Eighteen is enough for second in total medals.
It's hard to imagine seeing anyone else like Phelps in our lifetimes.
