Olympic Weightlifting 2016: Saturday's Medal Winners, Scores and Results
Sohrab Moradi won Iran's second weightlifting gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with an impressive all-around display in the 94-kilogram final Saturday.
Moradi, who owns two gold medals from the Asian Championships, put together the best clutch performance of his career to outpace the worldwide competition. He posted the highest total in both the snatch as well as the clean and jerk to earn his spot atop the podium.
Here's a complete look at the medalists and the final totals from the Riocentro:
| Gold | Sohrab Moradi | Iran | 403 |
| Silver | Vadzim Straltsou | Belarus | 395 |
| Bronze | Aurimas Didzbalis | Lithuania | 392 |
Moradi gave himself a five-kilogram advantage after the snatch round. He then finished with an emphatic showing in the clean and jerk to complete the clean sweep.
For perspective, his eight-kilogram margin of victory is the largest in any of the six men's weight classes held so far during the Games.
Iran Sports News commented on the terrific performance:
Belarus' Vadzim Straltsou, the reigning world champion after posting a 405-kilogram total in Houston in November, couldn't replicate that performance on the Olympic stage. He finished second in the clean and jerk, but the hole was too large after a mundane showing in the snatch.
Meanwhile, Aurimas Didzbalis of Lithuania edged Thailand's Sarat Sumpradit for the bronze medal. He's dealt with some setbacks in recent years, including a doping ban that cost him a spot in London four years ago, but it was a strong bounce-back showing.
Eric J. Goodman of NBC Olympics thinks the Lithuanian is an athlete to watch now that he's back on the rise:
Perhaps Didzbalis' day to steal the spotlight will come. For now, it's Moradi's time to shine. He didn't break any world records, so his triumph may fly under the radar, but it was still a dominant effort that ended with a well-earned gold medal.
