Highlights

One of the most exciting finishes of the day came in rowing, as New Zealand's Mahe Drysdale took home the gold in the men's single sculls with a photo finish over Croatia's Damir Martin.

BBC Sport showed the finish:

The biggest headlines of the day also took place in the water, but there was no rowing involved.

In the final day of swimming at the Summer Games, Phelps had one final shot to add another gold medal to his awe-inspiring collection in the men's 4x100-meter medley relay.

Along with teammates Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller and Nathan Adrian, Phelps won his 28th Olympic medal, his sixth of the Rio Games, and his 23rd gold as the United States won the top spot by almost two seconds over Great Britain.

Murphy started the race off with the backstroke and set the tone with a world-record showing of 51.85 seconds to give the Americans the lead.

After Miller relinquished the advantage on the breaststroke, Phelps entered the water one last time on the butterfly, his strongest event.

With a run of 50.33 seconds, he put the United States back in the lead, allowing Adrian to cruise to victory in the freestyle, via NBC Olympics:

Not to be overshadowed, the women's 4x100-meter medley relay team was just as impressive, as Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Simone Manuel also won gold by almost two seconds.

The win was historic for Team USA, as NBC Olympics showed:

With the swimming events complete, attention will shift to track and field, gymnastics and basketball as the United States looks to add to its first-place medal tally.
