Olympic Track and Field 2016: Women's 100M Medal Winners, Times and Results

Alec NathanAug 13, 2016

The second day of track and field medal events of the 2016 Rio Games ended with a bang on Saturday night as Jamaica's Elaine Thompson took home a stunning upset victory in the 100-meter dash over fellow countrywoman Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.

American Tori Bowie took home silver with a sensational run, while two-time defending gold medalist Fraser-Pryce clocked in third just fractional seconds ahead of the Ivory Coast's Marie-Josee Ta Lou.

Here's a look at the official results and standings from Saturday night's 100-meter dash final:

And here's a rundown of the updated medal count, which continues to be dominated by the United States at No. 1 and China at No. 2:

The story entering the 100-meter final was a potential three-peat for the 29-year-old Fraser-Pryce.

After she took home gold in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics, Fraser-Pryce edged out the United States' Carmelita Jeter and compatriot Veronica Campbell-Brown for her second straight gold four years ago in London.

And while Fraser-Pryce nursed a sore toe in the lead-up to Saturday's final, she remained the prohibitive favorite to capture gold and become the first woman to win three consecutive gold medals in the 100-meter dash, according to the International Association of Athletics Federation.

But in the end, it was Thompson who burned past Fraser-Pryce, Bowie and the rest of the 100-meter field to give Jamaica its third straight gold medal in the 100-meter dash. Jamaica has also now boasted at least two 100-meter medalists in every Olympics but one dating back to 2000.

NBC Olympics on Twitter relayed a photo of Fraser-Pryce and Thompson celebrating in front of the crowd in Rio de Janeiro following the lightning-quick scamper:

With the win, Thompson solidified her status as the future of women's sprinting.

The 24-year-old was moving quickly toward earning that label over the past year, but she made her biggest statement yet on Saturday night after recording the world's fastest time in the event this year (10.70 seconds) and defeating Fraser-Pryce at the Jamaican trials, according to the Associated Press (via USA Today).

And considering Fraser-Pryce will be aged out of her prime by the time the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo roll around, Thompson should now be viewed as the natural heir to her throne as she sets her sights on sprinting immortality.

Post-Race Reaction

"When I crossed the line and glanced across to see I was clear, I didn't know how to celebrate," Thompson said, per the Olympic News Service on Twitter.

"There is a big screen back home in my community," Thompson added, per the ONS. "I can't imagine what's happening there right now."

"What I'm most happy about is that the 100m title is staying in Jamaica," Fraser-Pryce said of Thompson's win, according to the ONS

"I'm on the podium with my training partner," Fraser-Pryce concluded, per the ONS. "I'm proud of Jamaica - just look at my hair."
