Olympic Swimming 2016: Live Results and Highlights from Saturday's Day 8
Michael Phelps ended his Olympic career with a gold medal.
Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, and his teammates Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller and Nathan Adrian, set an Olympic record and took home the gold in the men’s 4x100-meter medley relay on Saturday night at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Murphy got the team out to a hot start with a world-record time in the backstroke, but the United States trailed when Phelps hit the water. He was able to make up the ground, and that allowed Nathan Adrian to close the show.
Phelps concludes his Olympic career with 23 gold medals and 28 medals overall.
Great Britain won the silver and Australia the bronze.
The Unites States’ women’s 4x100-meter relay team also captured the gold medal on the back of a strong final 100 meters from Simone Manuel in the freestyle.
That’s a significant accomplishment on its own, but the gold medal was also historic as it’s No. 1,000 in the United States’ history at the Summer Games.
Manuel, Dana Vollmer, Kathleen Baker and Lilly King made up the winning team that took gold.
Australia took the silver and Denmark the bronze.
Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri finished nearly five seconds clear of the field to win gold in the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle.
Connor Jaeger of the United States won the silver, his first Olympic medal.
Gabriele Detti gave Italy a one-three finish by snagging bronze.
Pernille Blume of Denmark captured the gold medal in the women’s 50-meter freestyle.
Simone Manuel of the United States, who was the surprise gold medalist in the women’s 100-meter freestyle, came up just short in her quest for a second individual gold and settled for silver.
Aliaksandra Herasimenia of Belarus took the bronze.
