Olympic Trampolining Gymnastics 2016: Men's Medal Winners, Scores and Results

Tom SunderlandAug 13, 2016

Uladzislau Hancharou took gold for Belarus in the men's trampoline final on Saturday, where a score of 61.745 was enough to place him atop the podium at the 2016 Rio Games.

China took the remaining two spots on the podium, with Dong Dong clinching the silver medal after scoring 60.535, followed closely by compatriot Gao Lei, who finished with a score of 60.175.

Hancharou was the only gymnast to score more than 61 points in the final.

Athletes were scored on execution, time of flight, difficulty and accuracy—hitting the mark painted on the trampoline—and it was Hancharou who emerged atop a raft of elite contenders.

The European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) provided a look at the final leaderboard, where China's best efforts weren't enough to derail the bid of one Belarusian prodigy:

Dong claimed bronze in front of a home crowd at the Beijing 2008 Olympics before following that up with gold at the 2012 London Games, and he was expected by many to defend his title four years on.

However, 20-year-old Hancharou had an Olympic debut to remember and robbed Dong of his perch just minutes after the Chinese star became the first gymnast to break the 60-point barrier on the night.

Despite his young years, the Belarusian displayed all the calm of a veteran in the sport and rightly celebrated the climax of his routine with a pump of his fists while still in mid-flight.

Will Graves of the Associated Press stated his surprise to see the Olympics newcomer surmount Dong's lead near the final's end, and only China's Gao had a chance at dimming the European's gold-medal prospects:

But a score of 60.175 was only sufficient enough to take bronze in the end, and Hancharou ultimately finished more than a point clear of the rest of the pack.

The podium finishers ended as the only trio to surpass 60 points, although Japan's Ginga Munetomo and Russian Dmitrii Ushakov, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, weren't far off with scores above 59.

Ushakov's countryman Andrey Yudin unfortunately wasn't so fortunate and cast a dejected figure after travelling in the air and requiring a safety mat to finish, resulting in a paltry score of 6.815.

This may be but the beginning of Hancharou's journey as an Olympic competitor, but if his performance in Rio is anything to go by, we'll be hearing much more about the Belarusian starlet in the years to come.
