Olympic Soccer 2016: Men's Quarterfinal Results and Semifinal Schedule

Mike ChiariAug 13, 2016

After an exciting and surprising day of women's soccer action in Rio de Janeiro Friday, the men took to the pitch Saturday with four spots in the semifinals on the line.

Chief among those set to compete in quarterfinal play was host Brazil, led by superstar Neymar. Brazil entered the tournament as the favorite due to the home-crowd advantage and the presence of Neymar, but other top soccer-playing nations such as Germany, Portugal and Colombia looked to improve their medal chances as well.

With group play officially in the books, here is a full rundown of Saturday's quarterfinal clashes, along with a recap of how each tilt reached its conclusion.

Germany 4-0 Portugal

Germany's march toward its first Olympic medal in men's soccer since 1988 continued impressively Saturday, as it dominated Portugal 4-0 to advance to the semifinals and guarantee the opportunity to play for a medal.

The match was scoreless for nearly the entire first half despite the Germans carrying the play, but that changed in the first minute of stoppage time when Arsenal's Serge Gnabry scored his Olympic-leading sixth goal to put them on top.

It was all Germany from there, as Matthias Ginter, Davie Selke and Philipp Max added second-half goals to put an exclamation point on Die Mannschaft's convincing triumph.

As pointed out by Metro contributor Jan Hagen, Germany had a huge advantage over Portugal in terms of its players having experience on the big international stage:

Hagen also added that Portugal was blocked from fielding its best possible team:

Despite the fact that it won't have an opportunity to play for an Olympic medal, 2016 can't be considering anything less than a success for Portuguese soccer due to its unexpected Euro 2016 victory.

With a remarkable 19 goals in four matches, Germany has to be considered the gold-medal favorite entering the semifinals.

Conceding goals was a bit of a problem in its first two matches, but the Germans have now manufactured back-to-back shutouts and are in ideal form.

If Gnabry continues his stellar play in particular, Germany is in great position to win its first-ever Olympic gold in men's soccer, East Germany in 1976 notwithstanding.

Nigeria 2-0 Denmark

Nigeria's history of Olympic success continued Saturday, as it defeated Denmark 2-0 to advance to the semifinals where it will face Germany in Brazil.

Veteran John Obi Mikel put the Nigerians up early with a goal in the 16th minute, and Aminu Umar added another in the 59th minute to put away the listless Danes.

Nigeria doubled up Denmark in shots at 14-7, and it seemingly carried the flow of play throughout with Denmark struggling to generate quality chances.

By virtue of the victory, Nigeria is guaranteed to play for a medal. It took silver at the 2008 Beijing Games and gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and a third medal could potentially be on the way.

In order to play for gold, though, the African side must get past a high-powered German squad that has looked unbeatable over its past two matches.

To make matters even worse for Nigeria, it will be without starting midfielder Okechukwu Azubuike, according to Deji Kofi Faremi of Just Football:

That could alter the Nigerians' attack significantly, which is far from ideal since multiple goals will likely be needed to defeat the Germans.

Nigeria is often billed as an underdog on the international stage, though, which means it should be comfortable in its role Wednesday.

Brazil 2, Colombia 0

Neymar got on the board early and Luan sealed it up late as the hosts advanced to the semifinals with an ugly 2-0 win over Colombia.

Neither side was in top form, as they traded 41 fouls and just six shots on goal. Neymar scored Brazil's first goal just 12 minutes into the contest, and the Brazilians held on despite an aggressive Colombian outfit. Colombia held possession for 52 percent of the match but drew six yellow cards and wound up with only two of its 11 shots going on goal.

The Brazilians are yet to give up a goal in their four Rio matches. After struggling their way to consecutive 0-0 draws against South Africa and Iraq, they have earned wins over Denmark and Colombia by a combined six goals.

Much credit is due to the defense, which has kept things clean in front of Weverton. The Brazilian goaltender has needed to make two or fewer saves in every game so far; Brazil has allowed just six shots on goal through four games.

The defensive prowess has atoned for the inconsistency of the attack, which was once again sporadic Saturday. That will need to be fixed if, as expected, the Neymar-led Brazilians want to walk away with a gold.

Honduras 1, South Korea 0

South Korea's strong run at the 2016 Summer Games came to a close Saturday, as Alberth Elis' goal in the 60th minute sent Honduras to the semifinals with a 1-0 victory.

South Korea spent most of the match dominating possession but couldn't take advantage. Despite holding a 62 percent possession rate and outshooting Honduras 16-5, none of their shots found the back of the net. Honduran goalkeeper Luis Lopez got stops on all six shots on goal sent his way, opening the door for Elis to take advantage of one of the few Honduran opportunities.

The forward took a pass from Romell Quioto at the center of the box and rocketed a shot to the lower left corner of the net, passing Gu Sung-Yun's outstretched arms. It was one of only five Honduras shots, but four of those went on goal. Honduras was selective in its opportunities but efficient in its attack.

They were also wildly aggressive on the defensive side, earning 23 foul calls. But only three of those wound up deserving cards, and Honduras is on to the semis where they can take out the hosts in Brazil.
