Murphy, who started off for the U.S., set a world record in the backstroke leg, turning in a time of 51.85 seconds.

It's the fifth gold medal of these Olympic Games for the 31-year-old Phelps, and the 28th overall medal of his career. Phelps also earned a silver in the men's 100-meter butterfly Friday night and has six medals in Rio.
Murphy, who won gold in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke earlier in the week, got the United States off to a fine lead over Russia and Australia with his record-breaking swim.
Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde was in awe of Murphy's performance:
Great Britain came back from fourth at the turn to take the lead in the breaststroke leg, with Adam Peaty surging past Miller. Great Britain's James Guy kept pace with Phelps on the third leg, but Phelps did enough to get Adrian into the water first for the final leg.
USA Today's Nicole Auerbach noted Phelps' leg was huge in setting up the United States for victory:
There would be no catching Adrian, who brought the United States home in stunning fashion.
For Adrian, it's his second gold and fourth medal overall in Rio. Saturday's win gave Miller his first gold to go along with a bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke.
After his three-way tie for silver in the men's 100-meter butterfly Friday, Phelps was emphatic he will not be participating in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, despite friend and teammate Ryan Lochte suggesting otherwise.
“I will just clarify that Ryan doesn’t know what he is talking about,” Phelps said, per USA Today's Martin Rogers. “I am not coming back in four years.”
He reiterated his desire to move on after Saturday's race, per The Today Show:
Phelps has retired before, so it's understandable that some feel the door isn't shut. Also, the United States' Anthony Ervin won a gold medal Friday in the men's 50-meter freestyle at 35 years old, the same age Phelps will be in 2020.
However, if this was the last time the world got to watch him swim, it made for a wonderful parting gift from the greatest swimmer and arguably the greatest Olympian of all time.
