Olympic Track and Field 2016: Live Results and Highlights from August 13

Steve SilvermanAug 13, 2016

On a night where many stars of track and field were favored to repeat as champions at the 2016 Summer Olympics, only one achieved the feat.

Great Britain's Mo Farah recovered from a trip in the middle of the men's 10,000 meters to claim his second consecutive gold in the distance race.

The marquee event of the night, the women's 100 meters, went to Elaine Thompson of Jamaica. Thompson bested Tori Bowie of the United States and defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the race to become the world's fastest woman.

Jessica Ennis-Hill, who picked up gold in London, put up a valiant fight in the final event of the women's heptathlon, but she came up short in her quest to defeat Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam.

The other medal of the night session came from the field as Jeff Henderson clinched first in the long jump with a massive leap of 8.38 meters in the final round of the men's competition. Jarrion Lawson appeared to have a medal secured on his final jump, but his left hand skimmed the sand a few centimeters before his feet touched the sand. Lawson earned a disappointing fourth-place finish.

Track and field in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil resumes on Sunday, with Usain Bolt's quest for the men's 100-meter dash gold being the marquee event.
