Medal Count 2016 Olympics: Saturday Results, Standings and Latest Reaction
Before finishing Friday's 2016 Olympics schedule on a high note, the Americans suffered a stunner in Rio.
Having won the last three Olympic gold medals as well as last year's World Cup, the U.S. women's national soccer team was considered a sure thing to capture more hardware during the Rio Games. Yet they learned the hard way that nothing is certain in sports.
Sweden pulled off a gigantic upset over the heavy favorites, eliminating Team USA in the quarterfinals. After losing the first penalty shootout ever in women's Olympic play, the U.S. will go home empty-handed for the first time.
Before the nation's viewers could go to bed disappointed, Katie Ledecky, Maya DiRado and Anthony Ervin reversed the mood by each winning gold medals at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Center. As for Michael Phelps, he settled for silver for the first time this summer, augmenting his record career tally to 27.
Along with medal events in cycling, fencing, rowing, shooting, tennis, track and field, trampoline and weightlifting, Saturday will host the final race of Phelps' illustrious career.
Let's take a look at the updated medal tally in Rio:

The USWNT ultimately could have only boosted the nation's medal tally by one, but the premature loss stings for one of the country's most prominent teams.
In Thursday's wild match, each side had a goal wiped off for offsides within one minute of each other. It all boiled down to penalty kicks, which Sweden won 4-3.
Not used to losing, Hope Solo didn't handle Thursday's shocking defeat well. Rather than credit the victorious underdogs, she attacked them for implementing the same tactics head coach Pia Mariane Sundhage often employed during the Americans' last two gold-medal runs.
Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl transcribed her head-scratching remarks:
Her lack of sportsmanship did not go over well. Two-time Olympic gold medalist and ESPN broadcaster Julie Foudy called the comments "ridiculous" and "classless," per ESPN.com. She credited Sweden for playing "a tactically smart game."
CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli mocked Solo's criticism:
"Hope Solo the latest athlete to be mad at the other team for not letting their team win.

Alex Morgan—who scored the team's lone goal before accounting for one of its two penalty-kick misses—took a more diplomatic approach:
Later in the evening, the men's basketball team nearly caused another uproar. Two days after trailing Australia early in the fourth quarter, Team USA engaged in another contest too close for comfort.
Down three in the final seconds, Serbia's Bogdan Bogdanovic missed an open look that would have sent the game into overtime. Instead, the U.S. salvaged a 94-91 victory that left onlookers wondering if this is the year someone else snatches the gold.
After the game, per USA Today's Sam Amick, Paul George said the team can't continue to rely on individual talent and isolation ball:
Perhaps some will say Phelps also fell short of expectations by only winning a silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly. In his last individual race, the swimming icon finished in an unusual three-way tie for second.
Joseph Schooling pulled off the heist of the summer, delivering Singapore its first gold of the Rio Games.

As for Katie Ledecky, she dominated again. She shattered her own world record in the 800-meter freestyle, sweeping all three individual freestyle races in Rio. It would take a massive TV to have seen anyone else on the screen when she finished.
ESPN's Kevin Van Valkenburg compared the 19-year-old's coming-out party to Phelps in his prime:
She had to share the spotlight this night, as DiRado forced another heavy favorite to settle for second. Rallying from behind with a fervent finish, the 23-year-old American upended "Iron Lady" Katinka Hosszu in the 200-meter backstroke to earn her fourth medal and first individual gold.
Unlike Ledecky, DiRado won with no time to spare. NBC Olympics showed the narrow margin of victory she obtained to cap off her first and last Olympic run:
Making sure the men didn't fall behind, Ervin ended the night in grand fashion. Sixteen years after winning gold in the 50-meter freestyle, he repeated the feat. Per ESPN Stats & Info, he's the oldest male swimmer to win an individual Olympic event.
Even on a night where Phelps finished second, the U.S. bolstered its medal count in the pool. Phelps and Co. have a tough act to follow on Saturday, when he caps off his Olympics career in the 4x100-meter medley relay.
He has helped the team claim gold in each of the last three Olympics, so they're favorites to end his decorated career on top.
