Kevin McRaeAug 12, 2016

The United States was once again strong at the pool during Friday night’s swimming events at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.

The American team took gold in three of the four finals and a silver in the fourth.

Katie Ledecky entered the women’s 800-meter freestyle as a heavy favorite to take home the gold, and the word dominant isn’t even strong enough to describe her performance.

Ledecky not only won the gold, she finished more than 11 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor and set a world-record time of 8:04.79.

Britain’s Jazmin Carlin captured silver and Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas took bronze.

Michael Phelps was unsuccessful in his attempt to win a 23rd Olympic gold medal.

Singapore’s Joseph Schooling had to set an Olympic record to hold off Phelps, but he did it to give his country its first gold medal.

Phelps finished in a three-way tie with South Africa’s Chad le Clos and Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh for the silver medal.

In the upset of the night, the United States’ Maya DiRado surged past heavy favorite Katinka Hosszu of Hungary to capture her first individual gold medal in the women’s 200-meter backstroke.

Hosszu, who had captured three previous golds in Rio, was beaten for the first time and took silver.

Hilary Caldwell of Canada snagged the bronze.

Anthony Ervin, also in a pretty significant upset, took home the gold medal in the men’s 50-meter freestyle. He's now the oldest man to capture individual Olympic swimming gold.

Ervin, who is 35 years old and also captured gold in this event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finished just 0.01-seconds ahead of France’s Florent Manaudou.

Nathan Adrian took bronze.
