Little League World Series Regionals 2016: Scores and Bracket Results from Day 8
Friday's Little League World Series regional action set the stage for several championship games Saturday, as multiple teams earned the right to enter a one-game playoff for a chance to go to Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
The remainder of the 2016 LLWS will be determined Saturday, but a number of quality teams were sent packing Friday, and their dreams of playing in the world's premier Little League Baseball event were dashed.
Here is a look at the results of Friday's win-or-go-home games, along with a recap of how each contest played out.
Friday's Results
| Midwest | Kansas | Nebraska | 5-2 |
| New England | Connecticut | Massachusetts | 11-0 |
| Northwest | Oregon | Idaho | 12-0 |
| Great Lakes | Michigan | Wisconsin | 9-7 |
| Mid-Atlantic | Pennsylvania | Washington D.C. | 11-3 |
| West | Nevada | Hawaii | 9-0 |
Midwest
Following a big win over Minnesota on Thursday, Kansas (Frontenac Little League) advanced to the Midwest Regional final Friday with a 5-2 triumph over Nebraska (Kearney Little League).
Kansas previously lost 6-0 to Nebraska on Monday, but it looked like a totally different team with its LLWS hopes on the line.
Starting pitcher Collin McCartney was the biggest difference in the game, as he allowed just two hits and one earned run in 5.1 innings for Kansas.
McCartney shut down Nebraska for five innings, and while it made a comeback with two runs in the sixth, Logan Myers managed to slam the door shut in relief.
Four different players drove in runs for Kansas, who will take its well-balanced attack into play against undefeated Iowa on Saturday for a chance to play in the Little League World Series.
Iowa has outscored its opponent 16-1 in two regional games thus far, so while it may be favored to advance to Williamsport, Kansas' experience in pressure-packed games could prove to give it a leg up in the championship game.
New England
The Connecticut (Fairfield American Little League) offense exploded for the second consecutive day at the New England Regional Friday, as it blew out Massachusetts (Wellesley South Little League) 11-0 in five innings.
Connecticut scored a 17-11 victory over New Hampshire Thursday, and Friday's win ensures it will take on Rhode Island for a LLWS berth Saturday.
Richie Kerstetter once again led the way for Connecticut, as the cleanup hitter went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBI.
Kerstetter also started on the mound, and he allowed no hits and no runs while walking three and striking out nine in four innings.
Connecticut lost its no-hitter in the fifth when Massachusetts got two hits off Matthew Sawyer, but he managed to close things out and preserve the shutout.
Undefeated Rhode Island awaits in the title game, but Connecticut may be favored based on its recent performances.
Neither of Rhode Island's wins were blowouts, and with Connecticut tearing the cover off the ball currently, it seemingly has a great chance to bash its way to Williamsport.
Northwest
Oregon (Bend North Little League) set the stage for a potential slug fest in Saturday's Northwest Regional final Friday, as it took down Idaho (North Boise Little League) to move to within one victory of the 2016 Little League World Series.
Friday's game was tight and scoreless through three innings, but the floodgates opened in the fourth when Oregon scored six runs before adding one in the fifth and five more in the sixth.
Oregon benefited from a huge performance out of Blaine Causey, as he went 4-for-4 with a home run. Causey was also the starting pitcher, going five innings and allowing six hits, three walks and no runs while striking out eight.
Idaho's pitchers didn't enjoy anywhere near the same level of success, as Hatcher Hild and Eli Fernandez combined to allow 12 hits and 11 runs in 5.1 innings.
Oregon has outscored its opponents 33-2 in three games since dropping a 8-2 decision to Washington, who it will meet in Saturday's championship game.
Washington has 41 runs in three games and is expected to advance to the Little League World Series, but if Oregon can channel what it has done since losing to Washington, it may be able to get some payback in a high-pressure game with a trip to Williamsport on the line.
Great Lakes
The Great Lakes showdown was an early offensive onslaught for both teams. Michigan pushed across three runs in the top of the first, but Wisconsin responded with five in the bottom of the inning thanks largely to Jacob Ashmus' three-run homer.
Michigan scored four more in the top of the second, three of which came from a Blaise Millar homer, to make it 7-5.
The pitching finally settled down on each side, but Millar added a critical RBI double in the two-run fourth for Michigan to help clinch the 9-7 win. Millar finished 2-for-3 with five RBI and a run scored, while Ashmus was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Ashmus was a triple shy of the cycle, but Millar pitched two scoreless innings and got to enjoy the victory.
Michigan plays Kentucky in the regional championship game on Saturday.
Mid-Atlantic
The Mid-Atlantic game was tied at three through the first three innings, but Pennsylvania ended any hope for Washington D.C. with five runs in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth.
It happened without a single home run, as Pennsylvania rallied with a consistent onslaught of well-placed singles and timely hitting. Aidan Major and Cayde McCloskey set the tone from the top of the order with three base hits each, and Major scored three times and drove in three runs. McCloskey followed him in the order and scored twice and drove in a run.
Pennsylvania also received six strong innings on the mound from Cy Probst. Probst struck out six batters and allowed only two earned runs in the win.
Pennsylvania plays New York in the regional championship game on Saturday.
West
The West contest was a close game until the bottom of the fifth, when Nevada pushed across six runs to bust it open.
Luke Miles hit a solo home run in the inning, but the rest of the outburst came on singles, errors and walks. Rylan Evans, Garrett Cutting and Ethan Hare each had two RBI in the victory.
While the offense was impressive with nine runs, the story was Cutting's pitching performance. He threw a complete game and allowed a single base hit while also striking out 11 hitters in a dominant performance.
Nevada plays Southern California in the regional championship game on Saturday.
