Matt JonesAug 13, 2016

Five more medals will be dished out in the athletics at the Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange on Saturday, including the battle to be crowned the quickest woman on the planet.

Indeed, the women’s 100-metre final will headline the action in Rio de Janeiro on Day 11, while the winner of the heptathlon will also be confirmed. As for the men, the finals of the discus and long jump will take place, as will the 10,000-metre final.

After Friday’s absorbing day of athletics, Saturday’s action is not to be missed, with medals also up for grabs in swimming, track cycling and rowing. Here are the live medal standings and a closer look at what’s to come:

Schippers Favourite for Sprint Gold

The Netherlands’ Dafne Schippers competed in the heptathlon at the previous Olympics, but she has opted to focus solely on sprinting in the Olympiad since the London Games. It’s a decision that she will not have regretted, as she’s gone from strength to strength on the track.

Indeed, she enters the Olympics as the 200-metre world champion and a silver medalist in the 100-metre event. However, the 24-year-old has been in excellent form in the build-up to these championships in both.

As noted by BBC Sport’s Ade Adedoyin, Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt has been impressed by her displays, although he thinks she’ll fare better in the longer sprint distance:

Perhaps that’s because his compatriots are well fancied in the 100-metre race. Indeed, Elaine Thompson and Shelly Ann Fraser-Pryce, the defending Olympic champion, will push the Dutchwoman hard. However, with her serene running style and brilliant recent form, Schippers is looking good for a sprint double in Rio.

It was this day at the Games four years ago when Great Britain won three gold medals in athletics on a night that’s come to be known as "Super Saturday." All three successes from 2012 ago will fancy their chances of repeating those glories.

Jessica Ennis-Hill will be hopeful of winning another major heptathlon medal, but she is facing stiff competition from compatriot Katarina Johnson-Thompson. In the men’s long jump, Greg Rutherford—the world, European, Commonwealth and Olympic champion—will be difficult to beat in the long jump. The latter admitted he can’t wait to get going:

Perhaps the most likely to repeat his gold from four years ago is Mo Farah. The Briton has emerged as the dominant force in men’s distance running and anything other than gold for him in the 10,000-metre final would be a major shock.

In the pool, the men’s 4x100-metre medley relay is always a thrilling way to finish the swimming schedule, and it’s produced some sensational conclusions in recent years. The United States—the big favourites—Australia and Great Britain are the main contenders for gold in that one.

Michael Phelps, who has starred at the meet so far, will likely swim the butterfly leg for the American team. Bleacher Report UK made its feelings clear on the 31-year-old sensation:

We’re also set for a battle in the final of the men’s 1,500-metre freestyle. World-record holder and Olympic champion Sun Yang faces a major rival in the form of 21-year-old Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri.

Elsewhere, the winner of the single sculls will be determined in the men’s and women’s rowing races. At the other end of the rowing spectrum the eights finals will also take place, with timing and tactical nous vital in negotiating what has been a testing Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon course for the competitors.
