It was a busy day in South America, with medals available in a wide spectrum of sporting events, including archery, gymnastics, canoe slalom, track cycling, fencing, judo, rowing, rugby sevens, shooting, swimming and table tennis on Thursday.

In the quadruple sculls rowing, it was double success on the water for Germany as both their men's and women's teams secured gold medals. Hans Gruhne, Karl Schulze, Lauritz Schoof and Phillipp Wende crossed the line in six minutes, 6.81 seconds to defend their Olympic title after holding off an impressive late surge from Australia in the men's competition. Estonia wrapped up the places on the rostrum for their first medal in this year's Games.
Meanwhile, Germany's women quartet beat the Netherlands to the finishing line with a time of six minutes, 49.39 seconds after an exhausting two kilometres of rowing. Poland finished with the bronze medal.
In the women's 50m rifle three positions event, there was further gold for Germany as Barbara Engleder earned her first-ever medal, per Matthew Micali of NBCOlympics.com. The 33-year-old shooter finished with a score of 458.6 as China added two more medals to their impressive tally after rounding out the podium positions.

Binbin Zhang was just .2 of a point behind Engleder in second, with her compatriot Du Li finishing with a 447.4 total in the showdown event.
The women's kayak singles competition was won by Maialen Chourraut of Spain after crossing the line in a time of one minute, 38.65 seconds. New Zealand's Luuka Jones appeared to have won the event with a time of one minute, 41.82, but the 33-year-old toppled her rival with the final paddle of the day.

Facing winds caused further difficulty to the athletes, who were already handed a tough job of navigating the tricky Deodoro course. Australia added another bronze to their medal haul with Jessica Fox finishing in third place.
Elsewhere, and in the women's individual archery competition, South Korea's Hyejin Chang won the gold medal after beating Germany's Lisa Unruh, 6-2. The second seed was superior throughout the contest, firing three 10s on her way to victory with an imperiously consistent showing.

South Korea collected two podium spots in the women's event, as Bobae Ki beat Alejandra Valencia of Mexico 6-4 in a nail-biting fifth-set decider.
The United States continue to top the leaderboard on Day 6 with 35 medals in total (13 gold, 12 silver, 10 bronze), with China trailing by 10 (10 gold, six silver, nine bronze) and Japan in third with 19 medals to their name (six gold, one silver, 12 bronze).
Australia are in fourth position with 14 medals in total, while South Korea have moved up to fifth spot in the rankings following their late success in the archery category.
