Joseph ZuckerAug 11, 2016

Having already helped the United States win gold in women's team gymnastics, Simone Biles earned a gold medal for herself Thursday at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

With an overall score of 62.198, Biles placed first in the women's individual all-around competition. Teammate Aly Raisman came in second place, and Russia's Aliya Mustafina won bronze:

According to Paul Carr of ESPN Stats & Info, Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson (2008) were the only other American pair to place first and second in the women's all-around competition.

Jordyn Wieber, who won gold in the team event in 2012, enjoyed seeing Raisman and Biles bring home top honors for Team USA:

U.S. women's national soccer team star Alex Morgan echoed the sentiment:

Thursday's gold bolstered the argument that Biles is the most dominant American gymnast of all time. The Guardian's Bryan Armen Graham offered a visual representation of her nearly flawless competitive record:

After posting strong scores on the vault, balance beam and uneven bars, Biles had a nearly unassailable lead (1.533 points) over Mustafina heading into the final rotation. It helped that the floor routine is Biles' best event.

The bigger question was whether Raisman would overtake Mustafina to earn silver. Revenge was likely weighing on the 22-year-old's mind after she narrowly lost out on bronze at the 2012 Olympics. She and Mustafina finished with the same score in the all-around final, but the Russian took third on a tiebreaker.

With Mustafina having finished her floor routine, Raisman needed to score higher than 14.000 to move into second place. She delivered, posting a 15.433. According to USA Today's Nancy Armour, it was an emotional moment for both Raisman and U.S. coach Martha Karolyi:

At a different time, the Associated Press' Tim Reynolds thought Raisman could've been good enough to take the top spot on the podium:

Instead, Biles sailed through her floor routine, posting a score of 15.933, the highest in the event. She saved her best for the big stage. Her 2.100-point margin of victory was her largest ever at an international all-around event, per USA Today's Rachel Axon.

Biles is the fourth straight American female to win gold in the all-around. The streak began with Carly Patterson in 2004 and continued with Liukin in 2008 and Gabby Douglas in 2012. Biles headed into Rio with sky-high expectations and has delivered.

Jade Barbosa didn't enter Thursday's final as a medal favorite. She posted the 23rd-best qualifying score and only made the final after replacing Flavia Saraiva. The Rio native was one of the most popular gymnasts at Rio's Olympic Arena, though.

Barbosa's day ended early when she suffered an ankle injury during her floor routine, per ESPN's T.J. Quinn. BBC Sport posted a photo of officials helping Barbosa get in a wheelchair to exit the arena:

Rebeca Andrade remained the lone Brazilian representative in the final and finished 11th.

The gymnasts will have two days off before they head back to Rio's Olympic Arena. The women's vault and uneven bars events are scheduled for Sunday, with the balance beam and floor exercise beginning Monday and Tuesday, respectively.

Post-Final Reaction

Biles discussed how she was overwhelmed upon winning gold, per CNN's James Masters: "Every emotion hit me at once so I was just kind of a train wreck. Everything was going through my head but mainly it was like I had finally done it and when that hits you, you can't really stop the emotions."

Raisman felt a similar way as she enjoyed her second place finish.

"Being in Brazil, and not in the USA, you don't expect many people to be cheering for you or to get a standing ovation, so it was very emotional," she said, per the Olympics' official site. "The crowd—this was the best arena and atmosphere I have ever been in. It was just incredible. It's a moment I will never forget."

Biles was quick to shut down any comparisons between herself and other decorated Olympians.

"I'm not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps," she said. "I'm the first Simone Biles."
