Olympic 2016 Results: Live Updating Medal Count for Thursday

Rob GoldbergAug 11, 2016

Although Wednesday was comparatively a quiet day for the Americans, the United States maintained its medal count lead heading into Day 6, but the battle for most golds is on.

While Team USA is usually racking up a few gold medals each night in the swimming competitions, the country only won two events the entire day. Meanwhile, Great Britain and Japan had big days, while China continues to put together impressive performances.

Here is a look at the latest standings in the medal count.

Japan might have had the best day of any country with three gold medals, including two in judo. Both Mashu Baker in the men's 90-kilogram weight class and Haruka Tachimoto in the women's 70-kilogram class were surprises to reach the finals, but they came through when needed and secured gold medals.

Of course, the biggest star of the day was gymnast Kohei Uchimura. The Japanese star was already considered potentially the greatest of all time with one Olympic gold medal in the individual all-around competition in 2012 and six world championships in this event. He also helped Japan win the team competition earlier in the week.

However, his 2016 all-around title did not come easily, with many of the top gymnasts in the world performing as well as they had in their lives. This was especially true for Oleg Verniaiev, who led for much of the day and was up 0.9 points going into the final rotation.

The difference came on the high bar, where Uchimura was nearly flawless and Verniaiev stumbled a bit, giving the favorite his second consecutive Olympic gold.

It was such a good competition, even Verniaiev appreciated what Uchimura accomplished in coming from behind, per Rachel Axon of USA Today: "There are no weak athletes in this sport, but the fact that we compete with this legend, with this guy who already since 2009 does not give up, would not let go of this title, I think that this is the coolest thing in the world. The fact that we can compete with him is amazing."

At least he isn't bitter from losing by the slimmest of margins.

The United States was able to earn two gold medals on Day 5, including the first and last ones given out on the day.

Kristin Armstrong continued her dominance by winning the cycling road time trial for the third consecutive time, a feat rarely matched by men or women in any sport. This event is a difficult one because there are no competitors on the course, making it as much of a mental challenge as a physical one. However, the veteran had no problem posting the best time to end up on top of the podium.

At the end of the night, the 4x200-meter relay team of Katie Ledecky, Allison Schmitt, Maya DiRado and Leah Smith won gold for the United States. This was the third gold medal of the Olympics for Ledecky, and while this was a team event, she was the star once again as the anchor.

NBC Olympics showed her trailing heading into the final leg before quickly taking over:

This shouldn't be a surprise after she won the 200-meter freestyle already in Rio, but she's impressive every time she enters the pool.

ESPN Stats & Info noted Ledecky has a chance to put herself in rare company if she wins her best event later in the week, which is almost a forgone conclusion.

There is plenty more action to come Thursday, which started with a handful of rowing competitions that were delayed from the day before. Germany came through with two gold medals to help catch up in this category.

Additionally, more medals will be won in archery, canoeing, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, judo, rugby, shooting, swimming and table tennis in a busy day in Rio.
