Olympic Swimming 2016: Live Results and Highlights from Thursday's Day 6
Michael Phelps left absolutely zero doubt.
The most decorated American swimmer in history added yet another page to his legendary story by capturing the men’s 200-meter individual medley by nearly two full seconds for his 22nd career Olympic gold medal.
Phelps is the first Olympic swimmer in history to capture a gold medal in the same event at four consecutive Summer Games.
Japan’s Kosuke Hagino captured the silver, and China’s Wang Shun the bronze.
Ryan Lochte, like Phelps likely competing in his final Olympics, failed to medal with a fifth-place finish.
Simone Manuel captured gold for the United States in the women’s 200-meter freestyle, and she did it by setting an Olympic-record time of 52.70 seconds and tying Canada’s Penny Oleksiak.
Manuel is the first African American swimmer to capture an Olympic gold in swimming.
Ryan Murphy became the fifth American swimmer to sweep the backstroke competition by holding off Australia’s Mitch Larkin for gold in the men’s 200-meter backstroke.
He had previously won gold in the 100 meter and became the sixth consecutive American to capture gold in this competition at the Olympics.
Japan’s Rie Kaneto captured gold in the women’s 200-meter breaststroke. She found an extra gear in the final 20 meters and finished ahead of Russia’s Yulia Efimova, one of the more controversial figures of these Games, who settled for her second silver medal.
America’s Missy Franklin saw her Rio Games come to a disappointing end. She failed to qualify for the final in the women’s 200-meter backstroke.
